The Children’s Medical Fund (CMF) celebrated its 51st Annual Golf & Tennis Charity Classic on Monday, June 15, raising over $850,000 to support children’s mental health initiatives. The inaugural Martin Lifton Humanitarian Award was presented to Steven Lifton and his son, Jason Lifton, who were each recognized for their generosity, leadership, and commitment to improving the lives of children and families.
New Sag Harbor Whaling Museum exhibit to feature whalers of the African diaspora
The Sag Harbor Whaling & Historical Museum has announced the opening of “From Sea to Shining Sea: Whalers of the African Diaspora,” a collaborative exhibition being presented in partnership with Eastville Community Historical Society and Dr. Georgette Grier-Key. The exhibit opens on Saturday, July 25 and will run until Monday, September 6. The maritime industry—including whaling—was among early America’s most diverse industries, and one in which the community of Sag Harbor played a key role.
Farmingville Flicks family movie nights are back at Local Church
The Farmingville Hills Chamber of Commerce has announced the return of Farmingville Flicks, a free, family-friendly outdoor movie series presented by Local Church and the Sachem Public Library. The films are shown in the Local Church parking lot, located at 1070 Portion Road in Farmingville.
The James opens in Garden City
The James, a modern American brasserie from the Long Island hospitality group behind Arlo Kitchen & Bar in Northport and The James in Babylon Village, has opened at 910 Franklin Ave. in Garden City. The restaurant is the second location of the brasserie concept and the newest venture from partners Steve Squitiro and Andrew Affa, who operate as SAF Hospitality Group.
Grounds for expansion: Pilar Coffee opens in Roslyn
Pilar Coffee Bar has opened its first Long Island location at Bryant Plaza in Roslyn Heights, the first of three cafés the fast-growing brand has planned for the region. The coffee shop occupies roughly 2,500 square feet of ground-floor retail space at 333 Warner Ave., the mixed-use building that sits directly across from the Long Island Rail Road’s Roslyn station. Two more Long Island cafés are in the pipeline.
LI brokerage launches school supply drive to benefit Fiercely Leading Youth
Signature Premier Properties’ community giving initiative, Signature Cares, is collecting school supplies for its “Build A Backpack” drive to benefit Fiercely Leading Youth, Inc., a Bay Shore-based youth nonprofit. People are encouraged to donate unfilled backpacks, notebooks, folders, writing and art supplies, and other classroom essentials before students head back to school this fall.
Tilles Center announces full lineup for third annual Jazz Fest
Tilles Jazz Fest returns to the Long Island University campus in Brookville on Saturday, July 18, for a full day of world-class jazz, family-friendly programming, and vibrant community celebration across four stages, with gates opening at noon. Presented in collaboration with Jazz at Lincoln Center, this year’s festival brings together legendary artists and rising stars in the jazz world.
Patriotic reunion for 46 LI war veterans after Honor Flight to D.C.
American Airpower Museum will co-host with Honor Flight Long Island the August 1 reunion of 46 veterans who took a free Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. earlier this year on May 2. Courtesy of HFLI, the 46 veterans took a free, early-morning Southwest flight from MacArthur Airport to Washington, D.C. Veterans, their guardians, and Honor Flight officials visited World War II, Korean and Vietnam War Memorials, Arlington National Cemetery, Air Force, Navy Memorials and other sites.
Brookhaven Youth Bureau to hold 3-on-3 basketball tourney
Brookhaven Town officials, led by Supervisor Dan Panico, will shoot some hoops against local teens at a 3-on-3 basketball tournament in Mastic. The tournament, hosted by Brookhaven Youth Bureau’s Safe Summer Program, will tip off at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29 at the Mastic Aquatic Center, located at 300 Mastic Beach Road in Mastic. Players, who must be 13 to 18 years old to participate, will be randomly selected for teams the night of the event.
