Lone Conservative

With heavy heads, we share that Lone Conservative will shut down after eight years, effective today. This has been a difficult decision, but we believe the time for the publication has sadly passed. Lone Conservative was founded by Kassy in 2016. At a time when conservative college students often felt unwelcome contributing to their own campus publications, we provided a place for aspiring conservatives to have a voice.

In Barry Goldwater’s The Conscience of a Conservative, he laid out much of the foundations for what would become modern American conservatism. After going through issues such as education, states’ rights and taxation, the book’s final and longest chapter is The Soviet Menace, which details Goldwater’s views on the Cold War and how the US could achieve victory over the USSR.

In the wake of the worst attack against the Jews since the Holocaust, the international community has wasted no time in condemning the world’s only Jewish state. In January, South Africa brought a case before the United Nations’ International Court of Justice in The Hague accusing Israel of genocide against the Palestinians in Gaza. The Court’s ruling does not call for a ceasefire, but it does renew false claims about Israel’s actions in the war.

There is little doubt that present times feel turbulent. American’s trust in the institutions that are designed to hold the nation together continues to decline overtime. Whether it’s the riots of 2020, to the COVID-19 pandemic, government shutdowns, election turmoil, or foreign conflict, Americans find themselves in a pressing moment. When put to the flame, a country finds out where its resolve comes from.

The one thing no political writer wants to ever do is admit that a prediction they’ve made is truly, completely wrong. Yet, I’m here to do just that—in May 2023, I wrote a piece titled “DeSantis is the GOP’s Tactical Pick for 2024,” arguing that Florida governor Ron DeSantis represented the future of the party.

Following a disappointing showing in the Iowa caucuses, Ron DeSantis – the figure who many crowned as the presumptive heir to President Trump – dropped out of the race. Hypothetical polling preceding DeSantis’s entry into the presidential fray showed him as a formidable alternative to the former president. However, DeSantis’s abrupt exit, followed by his swift endorsement for his chief rival, revealed that the stranglehold that President Trump possesses over his party is strong as ever.

Fiscal responsibility has long been a rallying cry of the right. Unsurprisingly, this message is still falling on deaf ears—despite dire news making it more prevalent. In August, the United States’ credit rating was by Fitch. More recently, Moody’s the federal government’s credit outlook to “negative.” After decades of apathy toward the ever-expanding national debt, America is finally paying the price.

If there was any lingering doubt that universities suffer from an antisemitism problem, how they have responded to Hamas’s latest round of violence against Israel should dispel it. The most recent attacks mark the darkest time for the Jewish people since the Holocaust. More Jews died on October 7 than any single day since 1945. Whenever Israel is under attack, antisemitism surges around the world. Nowhere is this trend more clear than on college campuses.

Over the next few days, President Biden will with various Middle East leaders to address the recent events taking place in Israel and Gaza. Today he will meet with Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli leaders. Followed by several meetings with Arab leaders in the near future. These meetings will be pivotal for several reasons. First, this visit is meant to show the Israeli people that America stands with them and supports their attempt to bring justice to those who murdered over 1,400 civilians.
