Early in the planning for this new Highland Park home, the homeowners called an emergency meeting with the design team, including architect Celeste Robbins, who had been drafting a clean-lined house for the empty-nester clients.

Take it outside with new appliances, fixtures and materials that enhance outdoor living. Behold Neolith’s new Architectural line of nature-inspired wall surfaces—the brand’s first design created exclusively for exterior walls and vertical surfaces. Serpeggiante, one of three models, takes its cues from travertine marble with its linear veining and warm, soft hue.

When designing residences by the water, Vicente Wolf almost always accentuates the aquatic landscape through color, mood or sometimes even both, as exemplified by his clients’ Hamptons property along Mecox Bay. A once mundane structure with overly compartmentalized rooms, Wolf updated the home by streamlining its floor plan, banishing unnecessary ornamentation and appointing the interior primarily in white, because “water always brings up feelings of lightness,” the designer notes.

"This project really began with the dining room table, which started to drive the size of the space around it,” says Logan Leachman of his clients’ beloved extra-long heirloom, a piece crafted of wood culled from the doors of an ancient Italian church. The architectural designer framed it with windows that capture the sweeping landscape and mountain ridges of Jackson, glazing that extends across a great room to highlight the Teton Range.

The address of the clients’ home in Ross was enough to intrigue Brad Krefman. When he read it, he says, “I knew the project was going to be something special.” The designer’s intuition was correct: Situated on an acre-size property, the house presented magnificent grounds with mature oaks and exceptional views of a distant Bald Hill. “You don’t see that often,” Krefman notes. Early conversations with the owners further confirmed this would be an exciting endeavor.

For architect Ken Pursley, 2005 marked a watershed year, bringing the launch of his now nationally known firm and his first ground-up commission in Charlotte. Tasked by husband-and-wife clients to design a new abode in a venerable neighborhood, he could have made a bold architectural statement to announce his presence. Instead, he invoked what would become recurring themes in his work: classical elegance, timelessness and refinement.

The third annual Living by Design Virtual Showhouse is a celebration of design and all the elements that contribute to it, including the brands redefining how luxury interiors are experienced today.

The tale of how CEO Gary Friedman brought RH to Europe is no less than Dickensian in scale. Within the span of nine months, the brand will have opened design galleries in Paris, Milan and (in June) London—a feat Friedman says would be notable if it all unfolded in nine years . These new outposts offer more than furniture, they encompass restaurants, bars and even libraries holding rare architectural tomes.

Clean lines, classic proportions and a sense of both quiet grandeur and timeless beauty were key factors that inspired the design of this stately Colonial Revival-style Beverly Hills home, recall Tim Barber and Katie Peterson-Hesketh. “Our clients really wanted the symmetry and the graciousness that this house brings from the façade, and they liked 1930s details, which we implemented in small ways throughout the house,” explains Peterson-Hesketh, the project’s principal architect.

For this 1940s home on a terraced hillside in Kentfield, the goal wasn’t an aggressive modernization. Instead, the owners wanted to honor the traditional architecture while updating finishes and bringing in furnishings that spoke to their wish to share the house frequently with family and friends. “Hospitality is central to their lifestyle,” says interior designer Guillaume Coutheillas.
