More funding is needed for GP practices to address the ‘inverse care law’ in Scotland, researchers have argued. The team from the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh examined interventions and policies to ‘improve general practice’ in deprived areas of Scotland since 2000.

The Government's actual cash uplift to general practice under the GP contract 2025/26 for England represents an increase of just £4.69 per patient per year, practice managers have said. The Institute of General Practice Management (IGPM) has responded to the details of the contract, unveiled last week, highlighting that much of the value of the £889m headline figure is 'significantly reduced' after factoring in funds that have been rebadged and rising staff costs.

The BMA is 'no longer in dispute' with the Government and NHS England and has paused collective action after accepting a GP contract deal for 2025/26. Last week, the union's GP Committee England agreed a deal 'in principle' which will see almost £800m invested into the global sum as part of a £969m total funding uplift for general practice.

Welsh GP leaders have accepted a revised contract offer from the Government for 2024/25, including a £23m 'practice stabilisation payment'. The BMA said that the Welsh GP committee (GPC) was presented with 'a significantly improved offer ' from the Welsh Government this month, marking 'a positive turn' in the contract negotiations.

GP practices and PCNs have been asked to engage patients in conversations about the 10-year health plan by 14 February, as part of a 'national conversation' about the future of the NHS.
