Top Chef Canada returns for a landmark 13th season, celebrating the Canadian culinary dream as 12 of the country’s most talented professional chefs, including three returning alumni hungry for redemption, vie for the prestigious title of Canada’s Top Chef. Among the competitors is Markhams Lifini “Lif” Kalikutty, one of the top chefs vying for the title.

York Regional Police have charged five people and seized approximately $3 million worth of illicit drugs, a firearm, cryptocurrency, cash and more than $1 million in proceeds of crime following a lengthy investigation into drug trafficking. Project Ghostwire was led by the York Regional Police Guns, Gangs and Drug Enforcement Unit and the Cybercrime Unit in partnership with Criminal Intelligence Service Ontario.

Toogood Pond is known as one of Markhams beautiful landmarks, but it looks more like a swamp lately, and most residents have no idea what is happening. It is not a natural occurrence caused by a lack of rain; it’s a multi-year city plan Markham is carrying out to improve the park. Phase one, which involved installing safety signs and fencing around the park, was completed in 2024.

Shots were fired at a Markham residence on September 19 at 2 a.m. in the area of Warden Ave. and Highway 7. The York Regional Police reported that two males wearing all black drove a white Honda Civic to the scene, where they then walked up the driveway, firing multiple rounds at the residence. On September 13, at approximately 4:22 a.m., police responded to a call for a shooting in the Lawrence Avenue East and Underhill Drive area. It is reported that the victim and suspect were in separate vehicles; the suspect discharged a firearm at the 27-year-old victim from Caledon. Life-saving measures were performed, and the victim was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries. On September 17, the victim succumbed to his injuries.

Fête Chinoise is hosting its Mid-Autumn Festival for attendees to admire the full moon, light brilliant paper lanterns, share sweet mooncakes, and connect deeply with one another. This cherished celebration is set for September 26 at Porsche Centre Markham, beside Markville Mall. The festivities will run from 4 pm to 11 pm and will include Mahjong fun, a kids’ area, craft and colouring stations, an art gallery, photo ops, and face painting.

The Markham Public Library (MPL) provides much more to the public than meets the eye. Of course, MPL offers a wide range of books, comics, and magazines, as it always has, but its services go far beyond that. Through many partnerships, MPL helps residents with many logistical aspects of their lives, including settlement, employment, education, health, culture, and sustainability. For example, the library hosts free homework help in collaboration with York University.

Following a re-emergence of overnight thefts, York Regional Police is reminding residents to take precautions when leaving valuables in unattended vehicles. In recent incidents, suspects have been observed overnight in neighbourhoods between Bathurst Street and Leslie Street. Suspects approach vehicles parked on streets and in driveways, enter unlocked vehicles, and steal valuables. Thieves commonly target cash, wallets, credit and bank cards and other small items of value.

The Regional Municipality of York and traffic safety partners recently unveiled new road safety measures to promote enhanced safety in school zones across York Region. The safety measures include major improvements to pavement markings. The changes include optical speed bars that signal drivers to slow down. Wider, more visible pavement markings, including centre lines, lane lines, and edge lines, that will help drivers better understand lane position and road alignment.

Many playgrounds throughout the City are fenced off and ready for repairs. Local park work is being done under two projects: AODA remediation and lifecycle replacement. AODA’s goal through its work is to have play structures meet provincial accessibility requirements Parks and other public facilities require renovations over time as equipment needs repairs.
