Marshy Movie Time (14/08/2026) – Lorne Balfe, Kung Fu Soccer, The End of Oak Street, The Invite August 14, 2026 This week on RTHK Radio 3’s The Brew you can hear an excerpt from my interview with film composer Lorne Balfe, followed by reviews of Stephen Chow’s all-female sports comedy sequel Kung Fu Soccer, Anne Hathaway and Ewan McGregor in retro sci-fi fantasy The End of Oak Street, and Olivia Wilde’s pitch black dinner party comedy The Invite.
Lorne Balfe interview
Lorne Balfe interview August 14, 2026 I had the great pleasure of chatting with Grammy Award-winning composer Lorne Balfe while he was in Hong Kong earlier this week. In an epic, free-wheeling conversation we covered everything from performing Top Gun: Maverick live, taking notes from Tom Cruise, composing during COVID, the differences between scoring Hollywood blockbusters and low budget indies, the inevitable encroachment of A.I. on his creative field, and the future of the entire industry.
Kung Fu Soccer
Twenty five years after scoring a resounding critical and commercial hit with the martial arts sports comedy Shaolin Soccer, Hong Kong comedy legend Stephen Chow unleashes an absolute howler of a sequel that fails to replicate anything that made its predecessor a success.

Number One
Jang Hye-jin and Choi Woo-shik, stars of Bong Joon-ho’s Oscar-winning South Korean satire Parasite, reunite in Number One. This peculiar drama by Kim Tae-yong (Set Me Free) casts them once again as mother and son, putting their unshakeable bond to the ultimate test. The real highlight here, however, is the mouth-watering array of regional culinary delights that sustains their relationship.
Nolan-A-Thon: Insomnia (2002)
Steve and I head into the Great White North as Nolan teams up with Oscar winners Al Pacino, Robin Williams and Hilary Swank for a thrilling remake of Erik Skjoldbjærg’s gripping 1997 Norwegian thriller. But how Nolan-esque is Insomnia? VIDEO
Back to Love
Earlier this year, Lan Hongchun’s historical romance Dear You became a surprise smash hit at the box office – both in Hong Kong and especially in mainland China, where it has taken nearly US$300 million since April. One key to the film’s success was its use of regional Teochew (Chiu Chow) dialogue, indigenous to eastern Guangdong and all too rarely featured on screen. In a clear attempt to capitalise on that popularity, Lan’s earlier feature, Back to Love, makes a belated arrival in cinemas.
