Soviet double agent Aldrich Ames passed away yesterday at 84 while serving a life sentence for espionage (government photo). Prison is a strange place. Legacy newsrooms seem ready to give the Epstein files the same kind of special attention the federal Bureau of Prisons gave Epstein (Martin Gottesfeld, Grok, 2025). Surprise, surprise, Congress timed the release of the Epstein files for the Friday before Christmas, quite possibly the unlikeliest day all year for serious news to grow “legs” and go viral.

The officer in charge of Jeffrey Epstein’s prison unit posted the sign, above, according to the Justice Department’s inspector general (I.G.). Absent firsthand experience in the federal Bureau of Prisons (B.O.P.), the sign may give the impression that Epstein was flagged for just about all the attention his jailors knew how to give him. But something they chose not to do is likely more illuminating. Epstein’s jailors could not put him in the Witness Protection Program. .
