Torres improved to 31-7 with two draws by sweeping the scorecards, 80-72 on all three judges’ cards. The Albuquerque fan favorite showcased his veteran poise against the unorthodox Alvarado, who entered the bout as a late replacement.

In a recent post remembering Arturo Gatti, I had an interesting comment from friend Ian MacKillop. Sadly, and surprisingly (time flies), Gatti has already been gone for 17 years. MacKillop, himself a very good pro fighter and now an accomplished trainer, remarked that Alexis Arguello and Vernon Forrest also died within a month of Gatti in 2009. It was a sad time for fight fans. Let’s take a moment to remember “The Viper”- Vernon Forrest. Forrest turned pro in 1992 after a stellar amateur career.

Recently perusing some fight records, I came across Danny Garcia. I started to wonder if we’d ever see him again. I hope not. And I say that because I am a huge fan. Over the last 5 years, approaching what might be his last ring appearance, he seemed like a part-time fighter, albeit a world-class one. But he was only clocking in to work occasionally. Despite recording a win in his last fight, it is very much up in the air if the 38-year-old former world champion will fight again.

The winner was heading on to bigger things (see: title fight), the loser was probably calling it a day. And that is exactly what happened. Former junior middleweight champ Tim Tszyu (28-3, 18 KOs) scored a huge win, sending former three-belt unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. (28-2, 22 KOs) into retirement after scoring a UD 12 Saturday night in Tszyu’s hometown of Sydney, Australia.
