Sadly, their number continues to grow. The economic, political and military consequences of this disaster are immense. The suffering of migrant children does not end with their relocation.

It is not merely skills or job training. “Education does not measure its value only on the axis of efficiency: it measures it according to dignity, justice, the capacity to serve the common good,” writes the Holy Father.

This is especially relevant to Muslims, many of whom use ablution stations to wash their hands and feet before saying their prayers. Some non-Muslims also engage in ritual cleaning before praying. In Texas, these ablution stations have become the target of a bizarre campaign by Governor Greg Abbott.

The glorification of Mary, body and soul, teaches us that our true beauty does not lie in hiding the signs of aging, but in revealing the signs of love that never end,  and are even impressed on our flesh (cf. 1 Cor 13:8).

Two weeks before her death on March 30, 1990, US Catholic interviewed Sister Thea Bowman, F.S.P.A., who said: I pray for the children, that they may be saved and sheltered and nourished. I pray for the church and all the members of the church that they may be empowered to do the work of the church. I pray that all members of the church be united in their efforts to preach and to teach, to worship and to pray, to heal, to comfort, to reconcile, to feed, to nourish, and to raise the dead.

There is a temptation, reading Pope Leo XIV’s letter on artificial intelligence, to hear its two cities — Babel and Jerusalem — as a simple contrast between pride and humility, or between technology baptized and technology refused. But the deeper distinction the Holy Father draws is political, and it is the one I want to dwell on: the difference between homogeneity and communion.
