Himachal: Himachal Pradesh's monsoon misery is deepening by the day, with as many as 259 roads blocked across the state and landslides and rain-related incidents claiming 157 lives. Nearly 900 properties and public works have been damaged amid the relentless rainfall, with losses estimated around Rs 886 crore, according to the latest State Emergency Operations Centre (SEOC) report.

New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday slammed the Centre for making it mandatory to sing the National Song in full, in addition to the National Anthem, at the start and ending of any official function, and said the intent of the amended law to promote greater respect for Vande Mataram may not be achieved.

Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday extended till August 31 the interim protection from arrest granted to TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee in three criminal proceedings pending against him. The court also fixed August 25 for passing its final order on Banerjee's petition seeking quashing of the three FIRs registered against him. Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya extended the interim protection granted to the Diamond Harbour MP till August 31 or until further orders, whichever is earlier.

New Delhi: Fitch Group company BMI on Tuesday projected India's growth to slow to 6.6 per cent in the current fiscal as the boost to the economy from last year's GST reforms wanes and elevated inflation erodes household income. The Indian economy grew 7.7 per cent in financial year 2025-26. India remains Asia-Pacific's fastest-growing large economy, but the risks lie to the downside, mainly from a re-escalation in the Middle East or a weaker monsoon, BMI said.

Syria’s former President Bashar al-Assad, who ruled the country under a dictatorship for more than two decades, has been sentenced to death by a criminal court in Damascus after being convicted of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the country’s civil war. The verdict is the first death sentence handed down against Assad by Syria’s transitional authorities since his government collapsed in December 2024 and a new government took over under the leadership of Ahmed al-Sharaa.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday asked a special court in Delhi to conclude within one year the trial in a case relating to alleged radicalisation of youth using cyber space by terrorist organisations such as the ISIS. A bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana passed the order while hearing a plea filed by Md Heydaitullah, who had challenged a January 2025 verdict of the Delhi High Court which denied him bail in the case.

Ranchi: BJP workers burned tyres and blocked roads at several places in Ranchi on Tuesday as the party enforced a statewide bandh in protest against police action against students during their march to the state Assembly a day earlier. New Delhi: The Supreme Court has clarified that its order directing states and Union Territories to immediately register FIRs in cases of missing persons applies to every person, irrespective of age or gender. A bench of justices Ahsanuddin Amanullah and R Mahadevan said it was shocked to learn that some of the states are under the impression that the expression “person” refers only to children and does not include adults. "We find this to be a deliberate and mala fide bogey raised by such States.
