Gemfields takes $125m hit at Montepuez ruby mine
Rubies lie exposed at the bottom of a mine pit at Gemfields Montepuez mine GEMFIELDS expects to report a $73.5m loss for the six months to June after taking a $125.2m impairment against its Montepuez ruby mine in Mozambique, where it recovered fewer high-quality rubies than expected. The company also increased an impairment taken in its 2025 financial year from $35m to $65m after identifying a further $30m adjustment.
Glencore set for ASX listing in October
GLENCORE expects to start trading on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) on October 14 after satisfying the exchange’s substantive listing requirements. The miner and commodity trader said the ASX had approved it for admission as a Foreign Exempt Listing. Glencore’s Australian securities, known as CHESS Depositary Interests (CDIs), will each represent one ordinary Glencore share.
Rainbow Rare Earths paves way for Phalaborwa study in offtake deal

Niger doubles stake in Madaouela uranium project
NIGER has doubled its stake in the Madaouela uranium project to 40%, Reuters reported. This brings an end to a long-running dispute with Australian explorer Atomic Eagle. Atomic Eagle, formerly GoviEx Uranium, will retain 60% of the project and remain responsible for operations. Niger awarded the company a permit to develop Madaouela, in the Agadez region, in 2016.
Rio Tinto builds out metals trading arm

The move is part of CEO Simon Trott’s push to make the world’s second-biggest miner more agile and extract more value from its operations.
Glencore joins US critical minerals reserve in $500m EXIM deal
THE US government has selected Glencore to help it build a strategic reserve of critical minerals in a development that deepens the Swiss miner’s relationship with Washington. The US Export-Import Bank (EXIM) has committed $500m to the partnership, under which Glencore will source, buy and deliver critical minerals for VaultCo, a public-private initiative aimed at securing supplies for American industry.
Copper retreats from near-record high as rate fears lift dollar
INDUSTRIAL metals fell on Wednesday as traders weighed the outlook for US interest rates against shifting oil prices, Bloomberg reported. Copper retreated from near-record levels after a six-day advance, falling as much as 0.8% on the London Metal Exchange (LME). Several US Federal Reserve policymakers have raised concerns about inflation.
