Minnesota Medicine is the journal of the Minnesota Medical Association, continuously published since 1918. The magazine is mailed to just under 5,000 physicians who are members or retired members of the MMA. An email link is sent to medical students and medical residents in Minnesota. The magazine also is viewable online.
Minnesota Medicine is intended to serve as a credible forum for presenting information and ideas affecting Minnesota physicians and their practices. The content of articles and the opinions expressed in Minnesota Medicine do not represent the official policy of the MMA unless this is specified.
Each bimonthly issue contains about 14 individual articles, including original research, clinical content, commentaries, and feature articles about physicians and topics of interest to physicians. Each issue also includes a section of information about the activities of the MMA. Most issues include articles that offer free CME credit to members of the MMA. Source

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) has released new tools for parents and physicians aimed at preventing and identifying abuse in infants age 6 months and younger. In 2025, the Minnesota Legislature passed legislation that directed MDH to make resources available to educate parents and caregivers on the signs of physical abuse in infants, and how to report it. Some of the new resources include a website, a fact sheet, and social media posts.
CMS Releases Proposed Rule for 2027 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule
On July 14, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released the proposed rule for the 2027 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS). The AMA is working on a formal summary of the 1,600-page proposed rule. In the meantime, the MMA offers the following overview: Conversion Factors For the second year, CMS proposes four conversion factors: $33.1693 for Medicare payments to qualified providers (QPs) in advanced alternative payment models (APMs). This reflects a 1.19% decrease from 2026.
AMA Report: Elevated Healthcare Spending Driven by Increased Utilization
The United States spent a total of $5,278.6 billion, or $15,474 per capita, on healthcare in 2024, according to a new AMA Policy Research Perspectives. AMA gleaned the numbers from data released by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) this past January. Healthcare spending accounted for 18.0% of gross domestic product (GDP) in 2024, similar to the shares observed over the past decade, except for the brief uptick in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic (19.7% of GDP).

Anne Blaes, MD, MS Blaes is a professor in hematology/oncology at the University of Minnesota, where she also serves as the co-director of the screening, prevention, etiology and cancer survivorship program within the Masonic Cancer Center. She is an active hematologist/medical oncologist with a special interest in breast cancer, cardio-oncology and cancer survivorship. She is a past chair of the American Society of Clinical Oncology Cancer Survivorship Committee.

MMA Launches New Program to Strengthen Physician Well-being
The MMA is launching a new program, exclusive to members, to strengthen physician well-being, reduce professional isolation, build a culture of connection, and foster sustained peer connections over time. Called Medicine Together, the physician-led small group program will offer a structured space for physicians to step away from the demands of practice, and build trusted professional relationships that often feel difficult to create in the pace of modern practice.
State Pursuing Medicaid Expansion to Treat Incarcerated People
Minnesota is pursuing a new initiative that, if approved by the federal government, will allow state Medicaid programs to cover certain behavioral health services and medical care for chronic health conditions for incarcerated people, for up to 90 days before release. The initiative, developed by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in 2023, is called the 1115 Reentry Services Demonstration.
