Minnesota Medicine is the journal of the Minnesota Medical Association, continuously published since 1918. The magazine is mailed to just under 5,000 physicians who are members or retired members of the MMA. An email link is sent to medical students and medical residents in Minnesota. The magazine also is viewable online.
Minnesota Medicine is intended to serve as a credible forum for presenting information and ideas affecting Minnesota physicians and their practices. The content of articles and the opinions expressed in Minnesota Medicine do not represent the official policy of the MMA unless this is specified.
Each bimonthly issue contains about 14 individual articles, including original research, clinical content, commentaries, and feature articles about physicians and topics of interest to physicians. Each issue also includes a section of information about the activities of the MMA. Most issues include articles that offer free CME credit to members of the MMA. Source

Former MMA President Passes Away at 85
Former MMA president and long-time active member Forrest Blanton Bessinger, Jr., MD, MBA, passed away on August 25. The pediatric cardiologist was 85. “Blanton was a strong advocate for physicians and for children,” said Dave Renner, CAE, the former directory of advocacy with the MMA who worked with Blessinger for several years.
National Medical Specialty Societies Offer Vaccine Guidance
On September 2, the Vaccine Integrity Project (VIP) at the University of Minnesota’s Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the Infectious Diseases Society of America issued guidelines recommending Americans continue to get immunized for influenza, COVID-19, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
New Survey Shows Health Misinformation on the Rise
On August 31, The Physicians Foundation announced findings from its 2026 Survey of America’s Physicians: Misinformation and the Erosion of Trust in American Health Care, examining how health misinformation is affecting patient decisions, the patient-physician relationship, and physicians’ ability to provide care.
State Releases Fact Sheet on Preparing for Patients Using Concentrated 7-OH Products
The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH), in collaboration with the MMA and partner physicians, has released an informational brief on concentrated 7‑hydroxymitragynine (7‑OH) and other kratom products, which are increasingly available in commercial forms such as tablets, gummies, liquids, and “enhanced” or “spiked” kratom products.

MMA’s Healthcare Careers Website Continues to Grow
HealthcareCareersMN.org, an MMA initiative, continues to grow and support the healthcare career aspirations of students from across Minnesota. The site, launched in late 2024, includes information about pathway programs and other resources that provide mentorship, training, exposure, and inspiration to students interested in healthcare careers.
Minnesota Supreme Court Dismisses Wrongful Death Claim in Favor of Fairview Health Services
On August 19, the Minnesota Supreme Court issued an opinion in favor of Fairview Health Services’ argument that Minnesota statute requires a trustee to be appointed prior to that trustee being able to bring a wrongful death action. In Hagfors v. Fairview Health Services, Keith Hagfors served a summons and complaint on Fairview Health Services, the University of Minnesota, and University of Minnesota Physicians alleging the wrongful death of his wife, Sara Hagfors, who died on April 9, 2021.

A group of Minnesota residents and fellows gathered outside the University of Minnesota Medical Center on August 24 demanding their first contract, something they've been bargaining for since last September.
