What I’m referring to is Michelin’s time as the sole supplier of tires for MotoGP. It ends this year, the French tire-maker to be replaced by Italian giant Pirelli for 2027. I won’t miss them. I don’t think many will. There’s been way too much focus on tire foibles in MotoGP these last few years. Too many tire pressure penalties. Too much talk of stratagems specifically designed to, well, avoid tire pressure penalties.

As riders, whether we realize it or not, we rely heavily on the previous generation to help guide us through our motorcycle journey. I call them our Moto Mentors: Those unsuspecting characters who hang around at shops, community rides and races, who still spend time in the garage looking at or reminiscing about their bikes, even if they don’t ride anymore.

A longtime favourite brand 
still provides consistent results. Every rider has a favourite tire. Marc Marquez loves Michelins, all seven of his MotoGP titles coming on French rubber. Three-time Superbike champion, Toprak Razgatlıoğlu, meanwhile, can’t wait to get back on his preferred Pirellis which, if the recent Brno test is any indication, will see him transformed from back-marker to front-runner. And Valentino Rossi?
