The Healesville-based group is scheduled to host a charity movie matinee at the Memo on Sunday 11 October to support their Christmas Hamper Drive. The event will run from 1 to 4 pm and attendees are welcome to stay for afternoon tea, games and a raffle draw after watching ‘The Sheep Detective’.
Rotary takes action
By Gabriella Vukman On Monday 31 August, the Healesville Club of Rotary combined the power of cartoons with a deeply personal account of survival as part of their campaign against Domestic Violence. At the Club’s meeting on Monday evening, Australian Cartoon Museum founder Jim Bridges presented his film Domestic Violence, using cartoons from his extensive collection to explore the causes, patterns and consequences of family violence.
Inquiry recommendations land
By Gabriella Vukman A Victorian parliamentary inquiry into the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) has called for major changes to the way injured Victorians are supported, with the report and outcome published on 25 August. Yarra Ranges residents who rely on the TAC scheme for long-term treatment and rehabilitation welcomed the inquiry, including Healesville resident Tamara Tesseyman, who was among TAC clients who gave evidence to the inquiry.
Healesville U3A celebrates 20 years

The anniversary luncheon will bring together current members with some of the people who helped establish the organisation in 2006, including all six of its presidents and five secretaries.
Tokar hits the market
By Gabriella Vukman For almost three decades, Rita and Leon Tokar have watched the Yarra Valley wine industry change from the ground up. When the couple bought their Coldstream property in 1995, there were no vines, no cellar door and no restaurant. Just bare dirt, tussock grass, thistles, snakes and the remains of a dead sheep. Their vision was to create a country home, harbour a few livestock and plant some grapevines to enjoy as a hobby.
Carter Morrissey to conquer national netball after being selected for Australian Kelpies
By Oliver Winn A young netballer from the Yarra Valley is taking his career to new heights after being selected for Australia’s national men’s team. Carter Morrissey said he was in disbelief when he found out he was picked for the Australian men’s team, known as the Kelpies, on 16 August. “I went to a selection camp not thinking that I’d be getting in… And when I got the call back, I couldn’t believe it for a whole week, and I still can’t really believe it right now. It feels pretty good,” he said.
Healesville Spinners and Weavers celebrate 600 meetings
By Gabriella Vukman The Healesville Spinners and Weavers Group celebrated their 600th meeting on Saturday 5 September at the Badger Creek Hall. 27 members joined in the celebrations, enjoying cake, a shared lunch and an afternoon filled with social activities after the meeting. Secretary of the Group Lesley Wilkinson said the celebrations went well.
Preliminary finals the end for Yarra Glen
By David Ball Yarra Glen Under 18’s faced Pakenham in a preliminary final in slippery conditions at Yarra Junction. With a few of their better players out with injuries, it was always going to be a tough task for the River Pig boys. They started with plenty of spirit and were competitive in the contest early in the quarter but were unable to maintain possessions as they went forward. Their defence worked hard and managed to restrict Pakenham to just two goals for the quarter.
A great year comes to an end
By David Ball In the netball, Yarra Glen’s D grade started the morning in their Preliminary final battle against Seville in drying conditions after some morning rain. They started in great style to be just one goal down at quarter time. The girls were converting well under the net as they kept up with Seville across the court. Having been well beaten in their previous two encounters, this was a promising start for the Yarra girls.
