Don’t be fooled: Those shoot-em-ups that often consume 90 percent of popular police shows do not reflect a cop’s life on an everyday beat. Rather, the work is all about community, community, community. So said Morris County Sheriff James Gannon during his annual lunch with members of the Morris County Chamber at Tilcon’s Parsippany headquarters on Thursday, Sept. 19. With Tilcon’s Rosalie Serapiglia acting as event emcee, Gannon answered several questions during the two-hour event.

During the past five years, passengers traveling on NJ Transit bi-level cars, many of which are used on the Morris and Essex line, have complained that looking out of the opaque windows is akin to a bad case of cataracts. Scenery is blurred and station signage is almost impossible to see. After three years of trying to develop a program to treat and repair the windows, NJ Transit has finally scrapped that plan in favor of swapping out the poly-carbonate panes with new ones.

MOUNT OLIVE TWP. – An Oktoberfest will be held from noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5 and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 5. The event will take place at Turkey Brook Park, 30 Flanders Road, Budd Lake. Enjoy axe throwing for adults, an inflatable slide for the little kids and Connect 4, Flying Chickens, Corn Hole, Yatzee and Jenga for the whole family. Jersey Girl Brewery will be onsite serving Oktoberfest beverages for adults 21 and over, identification required.

Hosts Wanted The Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns host family application is still open. Through the Friendly Towns program, New York City children, ages 8 to 14, visit volunteer host families for one week. Many participants are invited year after year to visit the same host family, and can visit through age 18.

Rep. Tom Kean, Jr., R-7, hosted his second annual Seniors of Distinction event at the Bridgewater Township Senior Center, to honor outstanding seniors in the community on Friday, Sept. 13. Kean honored 29 seniors, who represent all six counties in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District. Each was nominated by friends, families, and neighbors and recognized at the event.

The Wildfair estate on Fox Chase Road in Chester Township has been chosen as the venue for the 21st Mansion in May Designer Showhouse and Gardens to benefit the Women’s Association for Morristown Medical Center (WAMMC) to be held next May. Since 1974, the Mansion in May fundraiser for WAMMC, has raised nearly $14 million in support of Morristown Medical Center. This year, Wildfair will join the ranks of historic estates hosting the event and welcoming visitors daily from May 1 to May 31.

MOUNT OLIVE TWP. - A 44 year old Budd Lake woman was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance on Friday, Sept. 13, according to the police. Police said that at 5:33 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13, Officer Sean Smith responded to a report that a female appeared to be unconscious in the driver seat of a gray Ford park at the Village Green Shopping Center in the area of Das Creamery.
