The Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland and Vimy Forge, Canada’s national defence and security innovation accelerator, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) focused on accelerating Canadian innovation.

Memorial University is supporting Canada’s defence priorities as one of the founding members of the first integrated Canadian Arctic Maritime Security Consortium. Memorial’s President Janet Morrison joined six other partners on July 14 at a signing ceremony during the Maritime Arctic Security and Safety Conference in St. John’s.

Seafarers help keep the world moving, but the conditions of those working at sea are changing quickly. Dr. Sepideh Rajeziesfahani has received an International Post-doctoral Fellowship to investigate how changing ocean conditions may affect seafarers’ health, mental health and access to care. “We may not see seafarers in our everyday lives, but so much depends on their work,” said Dr. Sepideh Rajeziesfahani, a post-doctoral fellow in the Faculty of Medicine.

The presentation will explain the types of print and digital materials available at the CNS, along with the services available to support research, teaching, and learning about all aspects of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Saturday, July 18, 9:30-10:45 a.m. 306 Mount Scio Rd. This outdoor, drop-in, toddler & adult program includes stories, songs, duck feeding, and a stroll through our gardens and trails. It goes ahead weekly unless there is severe weather conditions. The trail is stroller accessible and the program is breastfeeding friendly. This program is ideal for little ones who are walking (~1yr) up to 5 years old.

As Memorial University celebrated its newest graduates at convocation this past May, a 2025 alumna discovered she would also be honoured during the ceremonies. Cory Ochs, who graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in fall 2025, was surprised to receive an award at spring convocation. Courtney (Cory) Ochs holds a master’s degree in community health from the Faculty of Medicine.

Dr. Sheila Garland has received the Canadian Cancer Society’s William E. Rawls Prize for outstanding contributions to cancer control research.
