NATE publishes three publications, three times each year. Primary Matters covers all the topics for those teaching English or Literacy to learners in their Early Years or Primary stage. Teaching English focuses on the issues and interests of those teaching English to older students. English in Education publishes research relevant to anyone involved in the teaching of English. You can see the range of content from the contents pages of the latest issues below; and you can get a flavour of the publications by downloading the PDFs of the sample articles. If you would like to receive hard copies of future issues and access on-line copies of all previous issues, click here to join NATE. NATE and UKLA publish joint statements of principle in response to the Curriculum and Assessment Review

Ten books about English Language you should read

The Curriculum and Assessment Review’s final report, published at the end of 2025, lists one of their main priorities for secondary school English as being revising the GCSE English Language course to develop a firmer focus on ‘the nature and expression of language (including spoken language)’. One of the prime reasons for this, as stated in the report, is to ensure that in the future, the Language and the Literature GCSEs have distinct identities.

Teaching GCSE English Literature Power and Conflict poetry with Philosophy for Children and Communities with Emma Leeson, Wednesday 22nd April, 4-5pm

This session, led by Emma Leeson, will introduce an enquiry approach rooted in P4C (Philosophy for Children & Communities) pedagogy, using an Extract from ‘The Prelude’ by William Wordsworth and ‘Storm on the Island’ by Seamus Heaney (from the AQA GCSE English Literature Power and Conflict cluster of poems). These poems will act as a stimulus for speaking, listening and thinking philosophically in a highly interactive and practical session.

Developing a theory of change for linguistic justice in schools

In October 2025, I was honoured to find out I had been awarded a Philip Leverhulme Prize, from the Leverhulme Trust. These grants are, to quote from the Leverhulme Trust, ‘for researchers at an early stage of their careers whose work has had international impact and whose future research career is exceptionally promising’. What this means is that from November 2026, I will have the time and resources to lead a three year project of my choice.

Adichie argues that if we only ever show one version of people or communities, especially marginalised ones, we risk creating stereotypes, and worse, we rob people of their dignity and complexity. She argues that stories have power: to humanise, to challenge, and to connect.

I finished a book recently which I connected with deeply. The reading experience was immersive, voracious and rewarding. Its core theme was loneliness, and I wonder if the book resonated with me so greatly because, two decades ago, I had experienced a period of penetrating loneliness, even though I had close friends and family at the time.
