It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Henry O. Pollak, who will be remembered for a career that comfortably straddled the line between mathematician and mathematics educator. Although Pollak had a distinguished career as a staff member and then head of Mathematics and Statistics Research at Bell Laboratories, it was when his love of mathematics entered the world of education that he had his greatest impact on teachers of mathematics and their students.

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Eugene “Gene” Arthur Klotz, who will be remembered for his visionary leadership in mathematics education and his pioneering role in harnessing technology to expand access to mathematics learning and teaching. Klotz received the NCTM Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011.

Students engage in three model-eliciting STEM tasks that connect mathematics with real-world problems. Through experimentation, data analysis, and design, students work collaboratively to test ideas and explain their reasoning. These STEM tasks are designed to support students' sense of mathematical belonging by providing opportunities to collaborate, test ideas, and see themselves as capable problem-solvers.

The Mathematics Education Trust (MET) is excited to announce it has selected Laurie Boswell, Diane Briars, and Douglas Clements to each receive the 2026 NCTM Lifetime Achievement Award. The award honors NCTM members who have exhibited a lifetime of achievement in mathematics education at the national level. The award recipients will be recognized during the Opening Session of the NCTM 2026 Annual Meeting & Exposition in Denver.

Reflect, Rejuvenate, and Recharge with Purpose: A Plan for the Summer June 2026 Summer typically offers educators on a 9-month calendar an opportunity to take a break from the regular school routine, filled with early mornings, late evenings, writing lesson plans, grading, and the never-ending assessment season. Summer offers a much-deserved break for teachers, students, and families, and it’s important to plan time to relax and unwind during the extended break.

June 4, 2026-The June issue of Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK-12 (MTLT) is now available. In the issue's Front-and-Center article, "A New Audience for Assessment Results: The Children," the authors challenge the overreliance on traditional, score-based assessments in mathematics, arguing they often obscure rather than support student understanding.

In response to The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) program-the highest recognition that a kindergarten through 12th-grade STEM teacher may receive for outstanding teaching in the United States- request for public comments as part of a comprehensive review by the National Science Foundation (NSF), NCTM has submitted the following response.
