Despite improvements in life expectancy seen in developed countries in recent decades, health problems, particularly from long-term chronic conditions, still result in avoidable suffering for millions of people around the world.
The Nuffield Department of Population Health (NDPH) was created in July 2013 to undertake research and train scientists to seek answers to some of the most important questions about the causes, prevention and treatment of disease. We lead human health forward by reducing disability and premature death in both the developed and developing worlds. The challenges we face are increasingly complex and require evidence from large studies and collaboration across multiple disciplines and with other scientists around the world.
Our visual identity and brand name – Oxford Population Health – were introduced in 2021 to demonstrate our particular focus on population health science and our bold approach to preventing avoidable suffering and death. Our new visual identity reflects our purpose and clarifies the relationship between the department, the University, and our six longstanding research groups. Source

The study is published in International Journal of Cancer. Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is one of the two main types of oesophageal cancer.
Carbon monoxide linked to lower Parkinson’s risk, opening potential new treatment pathway
A study of more than half a million adults has found that higher levels of exhaled carbon monoxide were associated with a lower risk of Parkinson’s disease. The findings, published in JAMA Neurology, uncover a possible new explanation for the consistently lower rates of Parkinson’s among smokers that have long puzzled scientists. Parkinson’s is the second most common neurodegenerative condition worldwide.
Oxford Population Health offers new Master of Public Health
The University of Oxford will soon begin accepting applications for a new Master of Public Health (MPH) in Public Health Research, with the first intake of students starting in October 2027. The one-year, full-time course will be delivered by a multidisciplinary team of academics from Oxford Population Health. It will provide students with a comprehensive understanding of public health research as well as the skills to undertake and implement that research.
How body fat is stored across organs may reveal hidden health risks, study suggests
Researchers from Oxford Population Health and the University of Oxford’s Big Data Institute have contributed to a new study showing that how fat accumulates in the body is just as important for identifying different health risks as a person’s overall weight. Their findings suggest that looking at how fat is distributed across the whole body, including in and around multiple organs, could help identify people at higher risk and support more personalised prevention and treatment in future.
Could GLP-1 drugs prevent blood cancers and other diseases of ageing?
A new international research programme will investigate whether glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists ‒ widely used to treat diabetes and obesity ‒ could be repurposed to prevent the progression of clonal haematopoiesis and its associated diseases.
New open-source tool helps researchers test robustness of findings
Researchers at Oxford Population Health’s Demographic Science Unit and the Leverhulme Centre for Demographic Science have developed RobustiPy, a new open-source tool, to ensure research is robust and reliable. RobustiPy was formally introduced in a paper published in Patterns today. Scientific modelling can produce a range of possible outcomes due to the variation that exists in all environments. To see how reliable their findings are, researchers often complete robustness tests.
Statins reduce hospital admissions but increase overall healthcare use
A new study led by researchers at Oxford Population Health’s Economics of Population Health Research Centre has found that while statin therapy reduces the rates of hospital admissions and prescription medications over a person's lifetime, it also leads to greater overall healthcare use in the long run because people taking statins live longer. The findings highlight the need for long-term healthcare planning to accommodate changing patterns of demand.The study is published in Value in Health.
Combination of tobacco control policies needed to further reduce smoking deaths
Public health measures aimed at reducing tobacco use have saved countless lives in recent decades. But there are still around 1.2 billion tobacco users globally, and tobacco-related diseases kill about 7 million people annually, according to the World Health Organization. In Australia, high taxes on cigarettes and other tobacco control policies have achieved sharp declines in deaths from lung cancer and other smoking-related diseases since 2000, but progress has stalled in recent years.

An analysis of nearly three decades of mortality data in the United States of America (USA) published in Nature Health has found that cigarette smoking accounted for nearly two-thirds of excess deaths among White Americans with lower levels of education.
New study highlights importance of heart disease treatments targeting both cholesterol and inflammation
A study led by researchers at Oxford Population Health has identified 12 key proteins linked to ischemic heart disease (IHD) that could be targeted by future drug treatments. The study is published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC). Heart disease or heart attack caused by blockage of the coronary arteries, known as IHD, is a leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for about 9 million deaths annually.
