Guwahati: Armyworm attacks have affected around 435 hectares of paddy-growing land in Assam’s Sivasagar district, adding to the difficulties faced by farmers after the recent floods. Agricultural officials have found the pest in several parts of the district, including Nitaipukhuri, Maharani, Namti Pathar and Jerenga Pathar. Amguri has also reported infestations in different locations, while parts of Nazira and Dhupabor have been affected as well.

Guwahati: The eviction of street vendors from key stretches of Fancy Bazar has sparked protests in Guwahati, with nearly 200 vendors taking to the streets on Wednesday, September 9, demanding that the administration reconsider the eviction and allow them to resume their businesses. According to an application dated September 4, the vendors said the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) had stopped them from opening their roadside shops from September 1.

Guwahati: Five young orangutans have been rescued from a casuarina plantation in Odisha’s Balasore district, prompting a probe into how the endangered animals, which are not native to India, reached the area. The orangutans were found in the Udayapur section of the Jaleswar Range in the Udayapur-Talsari forest area during routine patrolling on September 8. The Odisha Forest Department subsequently shifted them to Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar for medical examination and quarantine.
