WESTON — Back Yard Beekeepers Association (BYBA) is accepting applications for the fifth annual Jeff Shwartz “Be Educated in Entomology Scholarship Fund.” The scholarship provides up to $500 toward an educational experience intended to broaden the recipient’s knowledge and benefit fellow earthlings and the natural world. The scholarship honors the legacy of Jeff Shwartz, a respected beekeeper, mentor, community volunteer, and member of the Weston-based Back Yard Beekeepers Association.
American Legion Post 202, Auxiliary Unit 176 Send Students To Boys & Girls State
American Legion Post 202 and Auxiliary Unit 176 sent four boys and four girls to Boys and Girls State programs from June 27 to July 2. This year’s program was held at University of New Haven. Boys and Girls State programs are prestigious and widely respected, particularly by college admissions officers and military academies.
Wrestler Joey Cotter Is An All American
Newtown wrestler Joey Cotter earned one of the highest honors in American high school wrestling. Competing in the 16U Boys Freestyle division at 100 pounds, Cotter battled through one of the nation's toughest brackets to earn All American status with a sixth-place finish at the US Marine Corps Junior National Championships in Fargo, N. Dak. in mid July.

July 20, 2001 HOMETOWN NEWSPAPER of Mike Salvatore. * * * * * Police are conducting a criminal investigation into an apparent prank which caused extensive interior flooding damage on three levels of the new wing at Newtown High School on Friday, July 13. The flooding is estimated to have caused more than $100,000 in damage to the building and its contents, including seven classrooms, the new lecture hall, and hallways. An estimated 25,000 square feet of floor area was affected.

While the apex of the 2026 Semiquincentennial celebrations occurred ahead of and on July 4 — coinciding with the adoption of The Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress — local events to celebrate the 250th anniversary of this country’s founding continue. Admission is free for all events unless noted.
Girls' Volleyball Camp Signups
There is a High School Camp for ages 14-18 offered at Reed School Monday, July 20 through Thursday, July 23 from 6 to 8 pm. This camp will help high school players of all levels. Players are grouped by experience level and training is adjusted to ability. Drills progress from high feedback repetitions to fun, fast paced game-like scenarios. Beginners are exposed to the game, learn the skills and have fun with the sport.

Those bells will be in the hands of volunteers offering at least an hour of their time for this year’s Newtown-Bethel Salvation Army Christmas in July Campaign. Seven locations in town have agreed to host the red kettles on July 18.
P&Z Approves Restaurants, Medical Offices In M-5 Zone; Continues Text Amendment Discussions
On Thursday, July 2, Newtown’s Planning & Zoning Commission held a regular meeting to continue discussions on applications 26.12 and 26.14 for text amendments to allow medical offices and restaurant uses in the M-5 zone, respectively. Peter Olson, the attorney representing applicant 57 Church Hill Road, LLC, addressed the commission. These applications have been heard before by the commission as the development that is ongoing at 57 Church Hill Road is starting to seek tenants for the buildings.
