OpenAI said Friday that its artificial intelligence agents may have taken unauthorized actions against government websites, as well as other outside systems, that were discovered during a company investigation into areas where those agents acted beyond their assigned tasks or intended methods during training and testing.

A former Army soldier who helped hack telecommunications companies and threatened to release stolen records unless they paid ransoms was sentenced Friday to 70 months in prison, the Justice Department said. Cameron John Wagenius, 22, who operated online under the nickname “kiberphant0m,” was also ordered to pay $294,978 in restitution. Prosecutors said he and his co-conspirators attempted to extort at least $1 million from victim organizations during a campaign he carried out while on active duty.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told federal officials the government needs to “keep pace” with the speed of artificial intelligence and should adopt the technology during a Thursday event at the company’s Washington, D.C. office. “We really want to enable the government with this technology. We think it's critical that the government keeps pace [with] the change and stays more capable as time goes on. We really want to be sure the government understands this technology,” Altman said at the event.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore announced Thursday that the state's Capital of Quantum initiative is partnering with Paladin Capital Group to further advance quantum computing research. The Capital of Quantum is a public-private partnership anchored within the Discovery District Maryland research hub, a development just outside the University of Maryland in College Park and intended to provide office, residential, retail and research spaces.

The Trump administration claims it found more than $1.2 billion in suspected fraud and stopped $41 million more across five COVID-related contracts, according to a Wednesday press release from the General Services Administration.
