At the end of 2016, debt owed by the 125.8 million households in the U.S. was $14.769 trillion, up 3.2%. Credit cards accounted for $1.001 trillion or 6.78% of household debt, up from 6.50% at the end of 2015. The ratio of credit card debt to household debt was highest in 1996 at 9.88%.
