NNA industry alert — July 8, 2026 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Lynne Lance, lynne@nna.org The Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee (HSGAC) hearing on USPS reform fell short of expectations for those hoping to see a serious discussion about the future of the nation's mail system.
Imagine you are covering a speech and have only 30 minutes to make deadline
Chip Hutcheson What has been your best learning experience? What was the situation and what did you learn from it? Even though it was almost 60 years ago, I’ll never forget the assignment in a reporting class at the University of Kentucky my junior year. We walked into the classroom, and the professor said he was going to play a recording of a speech. We were to listen to it, then our assignment was to write a story about it — and we were to have it written within 30 minutes.
Ask the question and connect with readers
Jim Pumarlo Journalists are paid to be curious. One reporter, remembering his editor’s nose for news, recalled, “If he saw a city crew digging up a sidewalk, he’d stop and ask, ‘What are you doing’?” Often, other passers-by likely wondered, too. Inquisitiveness is at the core of delivering everyday news that is on the minds of readers. In short, always be on the lookout and examine what’s happening around you. Check out everything; take nothing for granted.

The 98-year-old newspaper was closed in the wake of the devastating Pacific Palisades fire that destroyed most of its commercial district in 2025 and displaced most of its residents. Instead of returning to readers’ newspaper boxes, though, the Palisadian-Post is now popping up in their inboxes.

Senate postal hearing reveals need for publisher engagement
NNA industry alert FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Lynne Lance, lynne@nna.org Prior to the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee hearing on USPS reform hearing, the National Newspaper Association submitted a statement to the committee and met with committee staff to share concerns about rising postal costs, declining service performance, and the impact these issues are having on community newspapers and the customers who rely on them.
Understanding the stages of competence
John Foust We all discuss information with other people, whether it’s with an advertising client, a prospect or a coworker. And because people have different levels of understanding, it’s easier to get in step with some than with others. According to the textbook, “Management of Training Programs,” which was researched at New York University, there are four stages of competence. It’s easy to visualize them as four steps on a staircase. Perhaps this personal story will help in visualizing them.
