Following the recently announced shortlist for the 2026 Wolfson History Prize, the University of York’s Sam Wetherell has been nominated for the prestigious award. Since 1972, the award has been the UK’s largest monetary history-writing prize, which recognises both the highest quality of writing and research in UK-produced historical literature, along with readability for non-specialist readers.

The growing popularity of the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) Party in Germany has been observed as one of the starkest examples of growing support for far-right political parties in Europe. New FOI data reveals the University of York recorded 45 bed bug reports in student accommodation in just three years, the highest rate in Yorkshire and the Humber. The University of York Students’ Union has launched a letter-writing campaign to MPs asking that students be allowed to register with two GPs. AI and the arts are simply something that to most do not mix. You may argue with that and see it as a way to help to generate ideas, but this eliminates the actual blood, sweat and tears that goes into the creative process. Over the last year, medieval aesthetics have been slowly infecting the mainstream. From homemade medieval princess Halloween costumes to popular interior design trends, it seems we cannot get enough of these pre-modern aesthetics. But where did the curiosity for medievalism stem from, and what does it say about our current cultural climate?

York’s annual Food and Drink Festival has returned to Parliament Street and St Sampson’s Square, running for ten days from the 18 until the 27 September! The festival first began in 1997 and focuses on promoting local produce. It features a delicious food market, cooking classes, demonstrations, and even live music at the centre of York. Several bars can be found near the live music tents, which feature craft beers and spirits. The market is open from 10am to 5pm every day.
