There are two older units at Oskarshamn that were permanently shut down in 2016 and 2017. Fortum has been assessing options for new nuclear power in Sweden since 2022. The application does not constitute an investment decision, but formally starts discussions with the Swedish state over potential support for the project. If the plan goes ahead, Fortum would eventually look to be a minority holder.

In a joint statement, 25 countries committed to Atlas, calling it “the first step towards revolutionising the civil nuclear maritime industry”. A forum to mark the launch of Atlas is being hosted by the US over two days in Washington.

The authorisation also provides for the relocation of protected fauna and flora and the construction of a new public information centre. Most of the work will take place in the municipalities of Gravelines and Longs-Plage, with the exception of a car park to the south of the site in Bourbourg. EDF said in a statement that the authorisation allows it to gradually begin operations aimed at preparing the site for the planned project.

The project has been awarded almost €1m ($1.1m) in funding under the programme. The application follows a first submission in May 2026 for a reactor park at Norrsundet in Gävle municipality. Blykalla chief executive officer Jacob Stedman said the company is continuing to identify locations in Sweden where advanced nuclear power could “deliver the greatest value”. He said Blykalla’s reactor technology could allow nuclear power to be built closer to industry and in inland municipalities where traditional nuclear power has not historically been possible.

Unit 3 was the first of the previously shut down units to begin restart, with one of its turbine generators connected to the grid on 22 August. The unit returned to nominal power at 07:01 local time on 24 August, the operator said. Unit 1 returned to nominal power at 19:39 local time on 23 August. Paks had reduced generation earlier in late July and early August because of low Danube water levels, which affected cooling water availability at the plant.

In his remarks following the groundbreaking, Urenco’s chief executive officer Boris Schucht said: “We’re making this substantial commitment to expand our US facility to serve our US customers’ needs.

The CAP1000 is China’s Generation III indigenous version of US-based Westinghouse’s AP1000 design. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, China has 60 nuclear units in commercial operation and 37 – significantly more than any other country – under construction. China’s official energy framework targets roughly 110 GW of installed nuclear power capacity by 2030, outlined under its 15th Five-Year Plan.

A team planning work in a restricted area can walk the route virtually, with live imagery from robotic platforms on site displayed as conditions change.
