10 Jun 2026 The NUJ has responded to the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s (EHRC) revised Code of Practice for businesses and service providers on how to comply with the Equality Act 2010. The updated code comes after significant public and legal debate following the UK Supreme Court ruling in April last year that the terms ‘woman’ and ‘sex’ under the Equality Act 2010 refer strictly to biological sex assigned at birth.
10 Jun 2026 The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) has agreed to withhold publishing the private addresses of freelance journalists upon request. Until now, when journalists registered as data controllers, their details were entered on a public register. The regulator’s new approach comes after the NUJ highlighted the problem and individual members pressured for a change in its policy.
"We were concerned to learn of intimidatory behaviour towards members of the media covering the Gaza solidarity march in Scarva. "This was a significant public event and journalists have a right to report without intimidation. I understand that several members of the media were threatened and forcibly moved from their viewing position in the village.Counter-demonstrators have no right to decide on how the media covers events or dictate where journalists stand.
08 Jun 2026 Barnie Choudhury will not face costs Costs will not be awarded against a Freedom of Information applicant, who was facing a bill of £14,000, a court has decided. The court ruled that freelance journalist Barnie Choudhury, who was supported by the NUJ, will not have to recompense the Judicial Appointments Commission, after a long-running dispute.
04 Jun 2026 The NUJ has written to STV ahead of its annual general meeting on Friday (5 June) to express serious concerns over staff wellbeing and the company’s leadership. On Monday (1 June) Ofcom approved STV’s plans to cut jobs and axe the northern edition of the News at 6 despite widespread opposition from staff, political leaders and the public, with only 4% of viewers supporting the plans.
04 Jun 2026 The Guardian has announced a fundamental review of terms and conditions for ‘casuals’, ‘freelances’, and ‘contributors’. This was announced to those groups of workers with notice of a forthcoming survey. The NUJ Guardian chapel officers and the NUJ Freelance Office were made aware of this initiative in advance, and have agreed to contribute to the process of review.

01 Jun 2026 The NUJ has condemned Ofcom’s decision to allow STV to cut its dedicated news coverage for the North of Scotland as “the weakest of decisions in the face of the strongest of opposition”. However following extensive lobbying and campaigning by unions, politicians, business leaders and viewers, Ofcom insisted on additional safeguards prior to opening the consultation to provide stronger local coverage for viewers in the north and north-east.
