Rockin’ Johnny’s Diner is opening a new location on Merivale Road, following the closure of its Westgate Mall location last fall. Enzo Mastromattei, franchise owner of Rockin’ Johnny’s Diner, told OBJ Friday the restaurant will reopen at 1651 Merivale Rd. early next week. The eatery will be taking over the former location of The Happy Greek restaurant near No Frills, Winners and Value Village.

Ottawa-Gatineau’s unemployment rate increased slightly to 6.7 per cent in June, compared with 6.2 per cent in May. The local economy gained 300 jobs last month and the local labour force increased by 5,600. Nationally, a better start to the youth summer jobs market helped the economy record steady employment gains in June, Statistics Canada said Friday. Employers added 18,000 jobs last month, the agency said, mostly in part-time and private sector work.

The Ottawa Charge will play at the Canadian Tire Centre beginning in the 2026-27 season as part of a multi-year deal with the Ottawa Senators, the Professional Women’s Hockey League team announced Thursday. Charge general manager Mike Hirshfield confirmed the PWHL team would leave its current home ice at TD Place Arena to play and practise at the Canadian Tire Centre starting this fall.

The Centretown Citizens Ottawa Corporation (CCOC) is proposing a redevelopment of its property on Loretta Avenue that would add up to 128 more residential units to the fast-growing Little Italy neighbourhood. The CCOC, which specializes in affordable housing projects, owns two low-rise residential buildings at 287-293 Loretta Ave. S.

With two of the area’s larger vacancies now filled, things could be looking up for Ottawa’s Chinatown neighbourhood. Yukang Li, executive director of the Chinatown BIA, told OBJ Wednesday that the return of the Yangtze Restaurant and Dining Lounge at 700 Somerset St. W. under new management is “big news for the community.” “We welcome any new business investing in Chinatown with open arms. Every business that chooses Chinatown is a vote of confidence for the neighbourhood,” he said.
