GREENVILLE — Fresh, healthy fruits and vegetables will once again be available to the Greenville community at no cost at a Produce Pop-Up Market scheduled for Wednesday, July 22 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Northern Light CA Dean Hospital, 364 Pritham Ave. The market is hosted by CA Dean Hospital, the University of Maine Cooperative Extension in Piscataquis County and the Piscataquis Regional Food Center.

Earthquake hits near Greenville
By Christopher Burns, Bangor Daily News Staff An earthquake hit near Greenville on Monday night, July 13. The magnitude 1.5 temblor shook the ground at a depth of nearly 5 miles about 10.5 miles northeast of the Piscataquis County town about 7:03 p.m., according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Since 1997, there have been more than 170 recorded earthquakes in the state, according to the Maine Geological Survey. The strongest quake in recent memory occurred on Oct.
New Milo fire pumper truck to hit the road
MILO — A replacement pumper truck for the Milo Fire Department has arrived from suburban Nashville, Tennessee, and is about to be put into service. The Milo Select Board had been authorized to borrow up to $250,000 for a minipumper or rescue pumper to replace a 25-year-old minipumper that overheated during an April fire on Elm Street. The Mount Juliet Fire Department, 15 miles outside of Nashville, has an $80 million budget and buys a new truck every five years.
Maine Cancer Foundation awards $466K in grants to support prevention efforts
FALMOUTH – Maine Cancer Foundation recently awarded seven Cancer Prevention grants, totaling $466,328. The Piscataquis Regional Food Center of Dover-Foxcroft received $75,000 for, Nourish Piscataquis: A Healthy Eating Initiative. These two-year grants will support projects that will reduce cancer risk for Mainers through multiple evidence-based initiatives. Cancer remains a leading cause of death in Maine, impacting thousands of residents each year.
Sons and Daughters of Union Veterans ceremonies in Augusta
IMG_7176 Contributed photo PERIOD ATTIRE — On July 2 Cobb Camp #68 and Douty Camp #11 Sons of Union Veterans and Sarah Elizabeth Palmer Tent #23 met at the Hall of Flags in Augusta as part of an event honoring Sgt. Andrew Tozier, flagbearer for the 20th Maine at Gettysburg. We then joined the 3rd Maine and 20th Maine Co. B reenactors at the Maine Military Museum, where a memorial service was held with a volley honoring Civil War veterans buried in the cemetery near the museum.
Randy Judkins will perform at Summerfest
MONSON — Maine’s visual comedian and new vaudevillian Randy Judkins will perform at Monson’s Summerfest on Saturday, July 18 at 1 p.m. on the Elliotsville Foundation Lawn on Main Street. Judkins will combine his interactive characters with performance skills like juggling, magic, storytelling and friendly audience participation. He has presented in 25 US states, Canada and Europe. Judkins has also been an instructor at the Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Clown College in Florida.
Riverside Grill grand opening and ribbon cutting on Saturday
DOVER-FOXCROFT — The Piscataquis Chamber of Commerce invites the community to celebrate the official grand opening and ribbon cutting for Riverside Grill on Saturday, July 18 at 1016 South St. The celebration will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the official ribbon cutting at 2:30 p.m. The event is open to the public. Guests can enjoy special food offerings, enter to win gift cards and T-shirts and help welcome one of the area’s newest dining destinations.
Milo Garden Club Summer Fair and Plant Sale continues 40-year tradition
By Victoria Eastman, Milo Garden Club president During a May meeting more than 40 years ago, Milo Garden Club member Arlene Westervelt suggested the club hold a summer festival. This moment was the birth of Milo Garden Club’s Annual Summer Fair and Plant Sale. This year it will be held on Thursday, Aug. 6 at the Milo Kiwanis campus from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Early fairs included plants for sale, food and refreshments.
Mayo Mill Dam DEP permit hearing will be Monday evening
DOVER-FOXCROFT — A public hearing on the Mayo Mill Dam will be at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, July 20, in the meeting room at the town office. The meeting had mistakenly been scheduled for the week prior, Dover-Foxcroft Town Manager Alsina Brenenstuhl said during a Monday evening Select Board meeting. Last month the Select Board accepted a $25,000 grant from The Nature Conservancy to help draft a request for proposals to develop riverside amenities.
