RenewableUK’s Flexibility and Grid conference deserves credit for convening it. The opening remarks from Tara Singh, RenewableUK’s new CEO, revealed some of the limitations that hold this sector back.

Today is the day the UK’s “Sovereign AI” future, and its “Net Zero” transition, both collapsed under the weight of their own administrative fiction. Within hours of each other, two announcements laid bare the delusions of British infrastructure planners. OpenAI, the golden child of Silicon Valley, announced it has frozen its flagship “Stargate UK” data centre project in the North East.

Britain is not collapsing. It is doing something more British and more dangerous: it is carrying on. Supermarket shelves remain stocked by a global supply chain we can no longer afford. Trains fail for reasons that have nothing to do with war. Meanwhile, the political class speaks in that bright, shiny tone people use when the roof has begun to cave in. This is what a national nervous breakdown looks like. There are no tanks in the streets.

Whatever Labour MPs do about no-hoper Prime Minister Starmer, it was them what put him there in the first place. They sat in his cabinet, nodded along to his nonsensical claims about tax, immigration and the Chagos Islands, and cheered his dull statements in the Commons as if they were hearing Churchill reborn rather than a man who can drain energy from a room in thirty seconds. “KEIR IS MY FRIEND,” said Ed Miliband, one of the ministers now jostling to replace him.
