© The Estate of Tony Stella 2026 On May 6th I opened Facebook and discovered that Berlin-based graphic artist Tony Stella had died. If you’ve never heard of him or seen his often brilliant paintings and illustrations, he specialized in film posters, DVD cover art, and work for film sites including online film journal Bright Wall/Dark Room (BWDR).

My sister and I would sit there with her and draw, too. My mother loved to be around my sister but my mother couldn’t not use drugs. It created lovely long lunches like this. My mother had an autograph show in September.

Prince died on April 21, 2016, three months after the death of David Bowie. Just like that I’d lost another musical and cultural hero whose sounds and visions were part of my teenage years in high school and college, my early adulthood working various jobs, and into maturity (graying hair, slower walk), all the while playing their old songs alongside new releases.

Readers, Last weekend I invited you to send me links to GoFundMe and other crowdfunding campaigns for those in the Oldster community (and their loved ones) who lost their homes or were badly affected by the fires in L.A. so that I could share them here. Thank you to those who responded. If you are inclined and able to help, great. I also understand that the need has been enormous and overwhelming, and many have already given to several campaigns.
