On January 30th, 2000, the St. Louis Rams played the Tennessee Titans at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta for Super Bowl XXXIV. The narratives for this game were immaculate. The Rams entered the season expected to be one of the worst teams in the league, mired at the bottom of the standings for the past 5 years, their starting quarterback suffering a season-ending injury in the preseason. Head coach Dick Vermeil turned to their undrafted backup, a former Arena (indoor) Football player named Kurt Warner.
On Scam Country: Part One
Despite what you may have seen on your aunt’s Facebook page, Jimmy Carter did not sell his peanut farm before beginning his term as president to avoid the appearance of impropriety. He actually put his family business in a blind trust. Blind trusts are the sort of thing society invents when it knows its version of democracy is just an oligarchy with an org chart. But Carter played fair and square; he truly gave up control of his company to an independent third party.
OnOne Elsewords: The EdTech Backlash Is Here, and It's Just Getting Started
Hello Friends, This week OnOne education correspondent Nora De La Cour is back in Jacobin to talk about dystopian landscape of ed-tech. Just when you thought it wasn’t possible for Silicon Valley to be more dumb and evil than it already is…. Nora writes: When nine-year-old Sunny entered second grade at his Los Angeles public school three years ago, a surprise awaited him: a personal Google Chromebook to use in his classes and take home each afternoon.
On Violence Part Two:
In 2022, I wrote about the death of Miguel Estrella. He was murdered by police in his hometown of Pittsfield, MA. They had come to answer an emergency call made by his friends because Miguel was experiencing a mental health crisis. Five years earlier, Pittsfield police killed another man, Daniel Gillis, who was also experiencing a moment of mental health crisis.
On Violence Part One:
Hassan Piker is having a bit of a moment, and it’s because, for some nigh inexplicable reason, a noticeable number of moderate pundits and politicians have gone out of their way to make him out to be the leftist antichrist.
The Right Has a Lofty Vision for Schools. Where's Ours?
Hi Friends! We're back to share Nora De La Cour's latest for Jacobin Magazine: The Right Has a Lofty Vision for Schools. Where's Ours? Nora deftly lays out modern movement conservatism's latest general pitch for (not-so) public education and how they've stumbled upon a politics of pedagogy that actually speaks to real deficiencies in the neoliberal model of education.
On FAFO for Dummies
There seems to be a misunderstanding. A few conservatives and centrists find it positively bewildering that people believe in left-wing political ideals and are willing to risk legal trouble to act on those beliefs. You see, leftists express their politics with a certain fanaticism that leads otherwise decent (read: white) people to break laws and suffer consequences that will affect their lives forever.
Wake Up Dead Man
By Akil Vicks Hi Friends! This week I got the chance to go on the Coffin Talk podcast with to talk about what leftist politics is really all about. And also the afterlife, which feels macabrely related to the consequences of leftist political expression these days. Mike Oppenheim You can check out Mike's YouTube here for a whole smorgasbord of interesting interviews and conversations.
On Grievance as a Weapon:
On January 7, 2026, Renee Good was shot and killed during an interaction with ICE agents in Minneapolis. Two weeks later, ICE agents shot and killed Alex Pretti as he tried to help a woman they had just shoved to the ground. And almost immediately, video footage emerged proving these narratives to be complete bullshit.
On Our Lady of Perpetual Grievance Part Two:
Bari would have most likely been successful in life either way. She grew up with a moderately wealthy, business-owning family. She attended Columbia University, where she founded the student newspaper The Current. She then scored an internship with the Wall Street Journal after graduation.
