Last Wednesday a burger chain jumped 15% and got halted for volatility. Nothing had changed about the burgers. Wendy’s spent the year getting taken to the woodshed. Same store sales in the US fell 7% last quarter and traffic dropped more than 12%. The board cut the dividend by more than half and pulled its outlook for the year. They’ve closed 289 restaurants in six months. Every metric looked brutal. And when things look dead, that’s when the vultures come out. Roughly 30% of the stock was sold short.
Long Bond Market Signals Divergence
Yo Pit Crazies, The S&P 500 is sitting within one percent of a record high. The 30-year Treasury closed Monday at 5.31 percent, the highest since June 2007. That is two weeks running where the long end repriced and stocks refused to care. I have seen records set alongside high rates before. Most of the 1990s looked like that. The difference is what Washington was doing in the background. Back then the government was barely borrowing.
Why I Stopped Shorting SpaceX
Yo Pit Crazies, I was wrong about the SpaceX IPO. I thought Elon Musk got out at the top of the AI run. The stock half of the call worked. SpaceX (SPCX) ran from $225.64 down to $104.83, a 53 percent haircut off the peak. SPCX isn’t a short anymore. The company put up $7.81 billion in second quarter revenue against the $6.93 billion analysts wanted, closed back above its $135 IPO price on August 10, and has tacked on about 35 percent this month. NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA) disclosed a $21 billion stake.
Crude Oil Prices Rise on Geopolitical Risk
Dear Trader, Crude is at its highest level in more than two weeks because Trump spent Monday threatening Iran and Oman. The 30-year Treasury is yielding more than it has since 2007. Futures are lower on both counts. More importantly, traders have spent three weeks talking themselves out of a September hike, and long rates climbed anyway. Jim Bianco has been poking at that all week and he doesn't have a clean answer either.
7726.25 resistance test today
⚠ Today's Signal YELLOW LIGHT Our old support is now new resistance here. So far we have bounced off our second level of support. Watch for a close above this or below this level, $7726.25, for our next move. Signal by Licia Leslie GREEN: High probability of the market moving higher. YELLOW TODAY: Be cautious when making a directional trade. RED: High likelihood of the market dropping.
Nike Just Hit A 12-Year Low And I'm Not Touching It
Nike traded at a twelve-year low this morning. Down 38% on the year, roughly 78% off its 2021 high, and it did not even fall on its own news. A competitor guided light and Nike went with it. Everybody loves a bargain, and I am not touching this one. Bottom fishing is how you end up with dead money for three years while the rest of the market runs. That does not mean I ignore beaten-up names. It means I wait for something specific before I’ll buy one.
Own the Trophy, Not the Case
Hi Traders, Earlier in the year in the Option Pit Dividend Portfolio I chose Diageo over Constellation Brands. Same shelf, very different bet — and ten weeks in, the tape has already picked a side. I bought Diageo (DEO) at $83.08 on May 29. It’s trading near $92 today — up roughly 11% — and I haven’t even collected the dividend yet. Constellation (STZ)? It was around $140 in late May and sits near $131 now, down mid-single digits.
30 Year Bond Market Moves Despite Congress
Yo Pit Crazies, I'm curious what the Pit Crazies think about this one: I think Congress works too much. For all the time they spend in session, what do they finish? This Congress has nothing to show for the year except COVID era spending still running through the pipeline. Treasury borrowed $432 billion in July alone, which is $14 billion a day. They got a D.O.G.E. hall pass last year and squandered it.
SPX 0DTE Bull Flag Setup Next Leg Higher
✓ Today's Signal GREEN LIGHT I am giving us the green light today as we bull flag gaining the momentum to take that next leg higher. Signal by Licia Leslie GREEN TODAY: High probability of the market moving higher. YELLOW: Be cautious when making a directional trade. RED: High likelihood of the market dropping.
Stock Price Disconnect From Fundamentals
Dear Income traders, I've got two names on the screen this week pulling in opposite directions. One grew earnings 116 percent last quarter and got sold anyway. The other is the most popular product in crypto, running on a business model that hasn't changed since 2009. I want to own the first and stay well clear of the second. Sterling Infrastructure (STRL) builds the ground under data centers. Site work, power, the dirt and electrical that go in long before anyone racks a server.
