ACS publishes workplace standards framework to more effectively manage surgeons
The American College of Surgeons (ACS) has released what it calls the first national framework that outlines measurable workplace standards for surgeons. The framework, “Developing Specialty-Specific Workplace Standards for Surgeons,” was published in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons (JACS). ACS states that the demands placed on surgeons, including long hours, unpredictable schedules and significant administrative responsibilities, can lead to burnout and workforce attrition.

Significant cutbacks, designation change confirmed at Nevada’s Boulder City Hospital
KVVU-TV in Las Vegas reports a confirmation from the CEO of Boulder City Hospital in Nevada that the facility will lay off approximately 70 employees and “end several services, including stays longer than 24 hours, as it transitions from a critical access hospital to a rural emergency hospital.” That transition will become official on May 1. Affected employees were notified on Friday that their positions would be terminated in 60 days, reports the TV station.
Researchers examine relationship between patient sex and perioperative hypersensitivity
A systematic review and meta-analysis led by Mayo Clinic researchers of sex-based differences in perioperative hypersensitivity (POH) has been published by the peer-reviewed medical journal Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. POH, the researchers state, is a rare, immediate hypersensitivity reaction that, in its more severe form as perioperative anaphylaxis, carries a 2% mortality rate.

Guthrie adds orthopedic-spine ASC to presence at former mall
Guthrie, a not-for-profit, integrated health care system that operates in the states of New York and Pennsylvania, last week opened the Guthrie Broome Orthopedic and Spine Surgery Center in Johnson City, N.Y.
