Just like you, there are many people in this country who want to save our democracy. And if we organize, we can, Many of us in the United States are asking hard questions for the first time: Will we lose our democracy? Is there still time to save it? How can we make sure we can vote? Will our votes be counted? And what do we do if, when we try to vote, we are stopped by armed men? How, if we have to, can we stop a coup? These are not hypotheticals.

Si hablamos directamente con los votantes que han perdido la fe en ambos partidos políticos sobre las preocupaciones en sus vidas diarias, podemos comenzar a reconstruir nuestra democracia. Muchos de nosotros en Estados Unidos nos hacemos preguntas difíciles por primera vez: ¿Podemos perder nuestra democracia a una dictadura? ¿Todavía hay tiempo para salvarlo? ¿Cómo podemos asegurarnos de que podemos votar? ¿Se contarán nuestros votos?

If we speak directly to voters who have lost faith in both political parties about the concerns in their daily lives, we can start to rebuild our democracy. Every time I hear about the insane amounts of money billionaires like Elon Musk and dark-money super PACs pour into our elections to crush grassroots candidates, it’s hard not to feel our democracy is broken beyond repair.

Siento gratitud hacia todas las personas que, a lo largo de los siglos, alzaron sus voces y se organizaron para hacer de este país un lugar mejor. Ahora es nuestro turno; nos toca a nosotros. Estamos celebrando los 250 años de la fundación de los Estados Unidos de América. Sí, celebrando, y espero que ustedes también lo hayan hecho. Sé que este momento despierta muchas emociones contradictorias. Por un lado, este país es nuestro hogar. Algunos de nosotros no tenemos otro lugar adonde podemos ir.

I am grateful for all the ordinary people who across centuries stood up and organized to make this country better. Now it is our turn; it is up to us. We’re celebrating 250 years since the founding of the United States of America. Yes, celebrating, and I hope you did, too. I know this moment brings up so many conflicting emotions. On the one hand, this country is our home. Some of us have no other place to call home.

Nos están arrebatando el derecho a votar. Es nuestro deber restaurar la salud de nuestra democracia, mientras aún podemos. En una democracia sana, tenemos voz en el curso de nuestras vidas, en cómo se trata a nuestros vecinos y en cómo se gastan nuestros impuestos. The right for every vote to count is being taken away from us. It is our duty to restore the health of our democracy, while we still can. In a healthy democracy, we have a say in how our daily lives are run, how our neighbors are treated, and how our tax dollars are spent. Right now, the majority of Americans are dissatisfied with how the country is being run, and where it is going. In a healthy democracy, we would be able to demand the change of direction we need with our votes.

Americans should demand the release of jailed Salvadoran lawyer Ruth Lopez — because it can happen here, too. Who of us has the right to live without fear? This is the question human rights lawyer Ruth Lopez has asked fearlessly in El Salvador — the country of my birth — for decades. It’s a question we all need to ask ourselves in the United States as well. For speaking boldly, Ruth is now in prison.
