Music > Live Reviews The Nick Rayns LCR, UEA 14/10/23 On what was an incredibly stormy night, Funeral For A Friend celebrated twenty years (to the day) of their debut album Casually Dressed And Deep In Conversation with a powerful, joyous performance driven by two decades of yearning to be understood. Funeral… had brought some friends along for the ride and opening up were The Nightmares.
Life of Pi
Arts > Theatre Norwich Theatre Royal 26/09/23 Last night I went on an adventure; a magical adventure filled with laughter, heartache, life lessons and truth telling. This production is fundamentally in a league if its own and I am left completely awestruck by its wonder. The story transports its audience around the world on land and sea as we accompany Pi on his perilous journey to save himself after tragedy befalls his beloved family.
Teenage Fanclub - Nothing Lasts Forever
Music > Album Reviews 22/09/23 On their eleventh full studio album, the Scottish titans draw in the night as thoughts become reflective and those hazy summer evenings slowly burn out. The record is full of reflection yet also about moving forward, not dwelling on the past. “Foreign Land” kicks us off, the song is drenched in feedback, not unlike “The Concept” from their seminal album “Bandwagonesque” it’s a sun-kissed, joyful opening track that insists on moving forward.
Nina Nastasia
Music > Live Reviews Norwich Arts Centre 09/09/23 This was a mesmerising performance by a completely singular artist. Accompanied by acoustic guitar, except on the incredible acappella opening song, Nina Nastasia appeared to effortlessly hold the audience’s attention throughout a set packed with beautifully constructed songs whose subject matter was often extraordinarily harrowing. The combined strength of the songs, and Nastasia’s remarkable singing, had a strangely disorientating effect on me.
Inspiral Carpets - Floral Image
Music > Live Reviews EPIC Studios 29/08/23 Support band Floral Image are a band that I have been told are very good, well worth checking out in fact, and judging by this quite exhilarating performance this evening, ‘live from Norwich’ my tipster was absolutely spot on. From the kick off they light up the room with their swirling psychedelic hedonistic frenzy of songs, think of Hawkwind’s, Silver Machine.
Let's Rock Norwich 2023
Music > Live Reviews Earlham Park 21/08/23 The Let's Rock Caravan of Nostalgia rolled into Norwich on Saturday, the last date of its tour. Unashamedly a retro festival, it’s often a curate's egg of one hit wonders, war horses and hardy-perennials, but the roll call for Norwich was particularly eclectic. The day started with a hint of this, as Neil X of Sigue Sigue Sputnik performed within the Hit Factory segment of the day.
N-Dubz j
Music > Live Reviews Earlham Park 20/08/23 I had the incredible opportunity to attend the N-Dubz gig at Earlham Park and let me tell you, it was a night to remember. From start to finish, the trio delivered an electrifying performance that had the entire audience on their feet, dancing and singing along.
Hamish Hawk and Redolent
Music > Live Reviews Norwich Arts Centre 17/08/23 Bringing a touch of Edinburgh magic to this fine City, Hamish Hawk and his trusty band arrive at the Arts Centre in fine fettle. Fresh from releasing one of the albums of the year in ‘Angel Numbers’ they have a collection of songs built to woo any audience they may encounter. Along for the ride and opening proceedings were ‘Redolent’ fellow label mates to Hawk, they sound incredibly beautiful in the church halls.
Miles Kane
Music > Live Reviews The Adrian Flux Waterfront 11/08/23 I am now well into my fortieth year as a gig goer, so getting the opportunity to take a friend’s young daughter to her first proper gig this evening was for me a rather exciting thing to do.
The Sherlocks
Music > Live Reviews The Adrian Flux Waterfront 08/10/23 It is three and a half years since I last saw The Sherlocks at Norwich Waterfront. Since then they have played everywhere, from Germany to Japan and California, and released a further three albums' worth of material. After parting company with founder members Josh and Andy Davidson, the Crook brothers brought in Alex Proctor on guitar and Trent Jackson on bass.
