Former Queensland Police Commissioner Steve Gollschewski has died aged 67 following a battle with cancer. Gollschewski, who retired as the state’s top police officer earlier this year after four decades of service, died on Friday. He became the third-longest-serving officer in Queensland Police Service history, after joining the force 46 years ago. In April 2024, he became Queensland’s 21st Police Commissioner.

Footage of an Australian police officer chasing after a runaway emu has gone viral online. A passerby reported the incident to police, after the stray bird became a “traffic hazard” for motorists near Nashdale, 270 kilometres west of Sydney, earlier this week. A young officer chased the native on foot, and at one point he even had to speed up to keep up with the bird that can reach top speeds of 50 km/h.

A family of five in Nepal has survived a catastrophic flash flood and mudslide after sheltering on the second floor of a turquoise house as much of their town was destroyed around them. When floodwaters tore through Trishuli in the Nuwakot district, much of the valley was wiped out within minutes. Homes crumpled, bridges gave way and the Trishuli river surged by up to nine metres in just 30 minutes. From the upper floor of their turquoise home, the family watched the destruction consume the town.

Aussie drivers are changing their habits behind the wheel as fuel prices remain high, with new research from finance experts Money.com.au showing that 39 per cent are driving slower than usual or below the speed limit to save money. According to the survey of more than 1000 Australian drivers, those using the tactic are travelling an average of 7km/h below the sign-posted speed limit.

A 16-year-old boy has been given a four month community-based order after tormenting a black swan with a vape and later dumping the dead bird in bushland. The incident happened in July on a boat near Dawesville, south of Perth, and video of it was later posted online. The court heard the teen shoved an electronic cigarette into its beak before smoke was blown down the bird’s throat. A 13-year-old boy then slapped it on the head. After the swan died, the cruelty continued off the water.

Tributes have poured in from around the world for journalist and feminist activist Gloria Steinem, who has been remembered as a trailblazer for women’s equality following her death at 92. Steinem died on Wednesday in New York City after spending decades campaigning for women’s rights and equality. Born in Toledo, Ohio, she began her career as a freelance journalist in New York and rose to prominence in 1963 after going undercover as a Playboy Bunny.
