New data has revealed the number of major truck crashes involving inattentive or distracted drivers on Australian roads has dropped by 32 per cent over the past year. The 2026 National Truck Accident Research Centre’s (NTARC) latest Major Incident Investigation Report found several positive safety trends, including notable reductions in driver fatigue (56.9 per cent) and in failure to give way (60.8 per cent).

Industry safety program TruckSafe has revealed it’ll launch its latest Safety Management System in Canberra next month. The launch, which will occur on November 10, coincides with the 30th anniversary of TruckSafe’s establishment, has led chair Paul Fellows to say he’s proud to see the organisation continue to support Australia’s transport industry keeping people safe.

Work has been completed on $12 million worth of upgrades to rest areas in Tycannah along the Newell Highway. The upgrades will see heavy vehicle operators have safer and more accessible places to stop on the highway in far north-east inland NSW. The project, which has been jointly funded by the federal and NSW governments, saw upgrades made to the northbound and southbound rest areas on the Newell Highway about 17 kilometres south of Moree.

Major transport operator Lindsay Australia has officially started the pick-up and delivery operations for Primary Connect from Brisbane to Mackay and Bowen. The first stage of a staggered roll-out covering Far North Queensland will be followed by extending services to Townsville in November and Cairns in February 2027, marking the completion of its Far North Queensland network roll-out for distribution to supermarkets.

The Queensland Trucking Association (QTA) has moved to welcome the federal government’s decision to not proceed with proposed changes to disaster recovery cost-sharing arrangements. QTA CEO Gary Mahon says the decision recognises the importance of protecting funding to restore roads and keep essential supplies moving in the state. He says it’s a “significant relief” for “Australia’s most disaster-affected state”.

A Western Australian based transport association is pushing for a joint civil and Defence plan to protect northern freight routes. The Western Australian Transport Industry Association (WATIA) is calling for Australia’s civilian freight networks and Defence logistics to be planned together, as it brings Western Australia, South Australia and the Northern Territory together ahead of the high-risk wet season.

Work has gotten underway to create a new dual lane, four-leg roundabout at the notorious Bruce Highway and Walker Street intersection in Maryborough. The Queensland government has revealed the roundabout will link Showgrounds Road, Walker Street and the Bruce Highway to improve safety and ease congestion. The new roundabout will be built without any land resumptions and largely follows the existing road’s footprint, minimising the impact on the local community and on Bruce Highway traffic.
