knitting, frown line, and Fireball Kid Tear Up Sala Rossa
I love a bill stacked with local bands, and if Montreal has an abundance of anything, it’s local bands. Knitting’s album release show for their new record, Souvenir (Mint Records), felt more intimate than your typical Sala show. A makeshift stage sat on the floor, buried under gear, and the crowd — which swelled after opener Fireball Kid — kept inching closer between sets. Amazing turnout for a Thursday with a stellar lineup.
I can’t stop thinking about the Xiu Xiu show in Montreal
Xiu Xiu was unlike any live act I’ve seen in recent memory. Hosted at the intimate Theatre Fairmount, their Friday night performance was unnerving and enthralling— leaning more towards performance art than your typical concert. Armed with only a vague knowledge of their music beforehand, I truthfully found it abrasive enough to leave the concert early, yet perplexing and captivating enough to remain at the constant forefront of my mind for days afterward.
IDLES is the air fryer of post-punk & English Teacher is a class-act
On a crisp autumn night, the punk-adjacent congregations of Centre-Ville gathered at the sold-out MTELUS, donning their finest black band t-shirts, to witness the advent of English post-punk quintet IDLES with support from English Teacher. My prior knowledge of these acts came from a speed-run listen of their discographies along with a few conversations with IDLES fans over the years that suggested this band garners a passionate fanbase.
La Luz live is a ray of psychedelic sunshine
At a sold-out Friday night show at Bar le Ritz, a giant golden cardboard cutout sun with googly eyes and a toothy grin took centre stage. From behind it, the four members of La Luz emerged, decked out in vibrant patterned button-downs that complemented the swirling flower projections behind them. With jangling guitar leads, ripping basslines, chilling synths, and an upbeat snare groove, La Luz transported the crowd, with their sonic waves, to a nostalgic and hypnotic dimension.
