Solemnity of the Assumption of Mary Today we celebrate one of the most special feasts of our Blessed Mother, the feast of the Assumption. This was declared to be a universal feast of the Church by Pope Pius XII on November 1, 1950.

Jesus did not mince words in today’s gospel about divorce and remarriage. His call to absolute, unbreakable fidelity can feel like an impossible ideal. Yet, for those of us driven by a deep longing for profound meaning, emotional authenticity, and enduring harmony, this standard is not merely a rigid rule. It is a vision of a sacred sanctuary. When parents pass away, children experience profound grief.

As a new retreat season begins at Passionist retreat centers, we once again open our doors to people seeking something that can be difficult to find in the pace of everyday life: time to become quiet, to pray, to reflect and to recognize the presence of God. For the Passionists, retreat ministry is more than one of the many ministries we offer. It reaches back to the beginnings of our Congregation and remains an important expression of who we are.

We can best understand today’s gospel by knowing that Matthew organized his gospel into five discourses, or teachings. They are: The Sermon on the Mount (teachings on the kingdom) The Mission (sending out the disciples) The Parables The Care of the Church The Olivet discourse on the last days Today’s gospel is part of the fourth discourse, Care of the Church – how are we to care for one another, how are we to live in harmony as community?

Hace unos años, mi director espiritual, el padre (+)Ronan Newbold, C.P., y yo estábamos tratando sobre mi vida de oración. Aquellos que conocían al padre Ronan lo recordarían como un sacerdote muy humilde e inspirador. A few years ago, my Spiritual Director, the late Father Ronan Newbold, C.P., and I were having a series of sessions on my personal prayer life. Those who knew Father Ronan would remember him as a very humble and inspirational priest. At one of our final sessions in the fall of 2020 before he passed away the following spring, he asked me how my prayer life was progressing. I told him that I was encouraged that with his guidance, it was improving, but I was open to additional suggestions.
