In 1985, a small group of the nation’s leading coin experts recognized that for the rare coin industry to realize its potential, some serious problems needed to be addressed.
Market participants soon became aware that one of the fundamental factors of determining rare coin values is the physical condition, or grade, of the coin. But due to the absence of a universal grading standard, they were caught in the middle of divergent definitions. Source

Market 101: The Splendor of the Tyrant Collection
Imagine the means and wherewithal to build and complete virtually any set of coinage ever produced... Indeed, Dan O'Dowd, a well-known tech mogul, did almost that. He built many phenomenal collections under the auspices of his "Tyrant" alias with little fanfare and in nearly complete confidentiality until a 2017 British news source revealed his identity. Most of the larger auction firms, especially in the U.S., respected his privacy while he spent more than 17 years building his sets quietly.

When PCGS began its operations in 1986, its focus was primarily authenticating, grading, and encapsulating United States coins of rare stock as well as "blue-chip" coins, like high-end Walking Liberty Half Dollars and Morgan Dollars.

She is also a canonized saint in both the Catholic and Orthodox churches for her role in spreading Christianity.
