INDOT reminds about political sign rules The Indiana Department of Transportation reminds Hoosiers to place political campaign and other signs outside state right-of-way. Campaign and other types of advertising are prohibited on state-owned or state-maintained property by Indiana Code 9-21-4-6, regardless of the time of year. Areas that should remain sign-free include intersections, interchanges, and rights-of-way that run parallel to highways, including medians, shoulders and roadside areas.
Rich Creason: Fifteen years raising horses
When I was in eighth grade (which was several years ago), my brother and I bought our first horse. Most kids wanted a dog or other small pet. We went big time. Mom and dad told us we could get one if we took care of it and paid all the expenses ourselves. I’m sure every kid who got a pet was told the same thing, but we followed through with those directions. My brother is three years older than me and he had a large paper route in Anderson and had saved all his money.

Erik Deckers: My dogs are so annoying
When I first started out as a newspaper columnist, I read a piece by a “serious” (i.e., humorless) news columnist that shoved my editorial career in a direction I had never wanted. This guy complained that sportswriters only wrote about grown adults playing children’s games, while humor columnists just wrote about their dogs, and that somehow made us lesser writers. How joyless can you be? So what if we write about our dogs?

David Carlson: For the love of the game
Of all the sports I played when I was young, baseball was my favorite. I loved playing the game, loved watching my favorite team on black-and-white TV, loved shuffling through my baseball cards, and loved oiling my Andy Pafko mitt. Whenever the weather was warm enough, my brother and I would play catch until dark. And all the time we tossed the ball back and forth, we pretended we were our favorite baseball players. Baseball still intrigues me.
Laura Merrifield Wilson: Examining the cost of money in campaigns
Money matters. It opens opportunities, provides for experiences, and creates connections that — even if possible without it — invariably become much easier with it. Despite The Beatles proclamation that “money can’t buy me love,” nearly every political campaign and candidate in American politics knows the great impact of a full fiscal war chest. The reality of modern elections lies in the necessity of having as much money as possible.
