Penn Hills interim football coach Dan Mason brings dedication to team, community
Dan Mason credits the Penn Hills football program for steering his life in the right direction. The Indians’ newly minted interim football coach would like to try and put others on the same path. Once Charles Morris resigned this summer after four seasons, Mason stepped up to take over. “I humbly took this position,” Mason said. “This team has a lot of history and legacy behind it. This isn’t something I did lightly. I felt God led me to it to lead this team and this community.
Penn Hills School Board approves 3.1% tax increase
Tax increase imperative to district’s financial health, officials say • | The Penn Hills School Board approved a 3.1% tax increase in the 2026-27 budget. (TribLive) Residents of Penn Hills School District will see a tax increase this school year under the district’s nearly $110 million budget. The budget calls for a 1-mill tax increase, or about 3.1%, with a homeowner with a median assessed property paying $2,281.75 in property tax. It was passed in an 8-0 vote on June 24.
County to close part of Universal Road in Penn Hills for $514,000 bridge repair project
A portion of Universal Road in Penn Hills will be closed for bridge repairs starting July 13. According to a release from Allegheny County Department of Public Works, part of Universal near Hershey Road is expected to be closed until October. “(The closure) is required for work on Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad Bridge No. 1, which carries Universal Road over the Union Railroad tracks,” the release said. The project includes deck, approach, sidewalk and barrier repairs.

Allegheny County celebrates completion of 40-unit affordable housing complex in Penn Hills
In 2023, NorthWood Commons was a vacant lot with a single apartment building, the remainder of a development project that was abandoned in the early 1980s. Three years and $22.3 million later, the lot is home to a brand-new affordable housing apartment complex designated for low-income residents. Allegheny County, in partnership with A.M. Rodriguez Associates Inc., celebrated the grand opening June 17 of the newly completed NorthWood Commons in Penn Hills.
