Did Philadelphia miss window to sue PBMs over opioid crisis?
Pappert PHILADELPHIA - Pharmacy benefits managers targeted by government officials and private lawyers are hoping a Philadelphia judge follows the lead of a Massachusetts colleague and tosses an opioid lawsuit filed by the City. In a joint motion filed on Jan. 15, CVS Health, UnitedHealth Group and Express Scripts moved to dismiss Philadelphia’s lawsuit attempting to hold the PBMs liable for harms flowing from the opioid epidemic.
PHILADELPHIA – CVS Caremark will appeal a $290 million ruling against it in Philadelphia federal court, as it seeks to overturn a penalty for allegedly overcharging the federal government for prescription drugs. The company filed its notice of appeal to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit on Sept. 15, less than a month after Judge Mitchell Goldberg tripled damages in a lawsuit brought by a whistleblower.

More Than 30 From Ballard Spahr Make D.C. Courts Capital Pro Bono Honor Roll for Service in 2024
Thirty-one Ballard Spahr attorneys are listed on this year’s Capital Pro Bono Honor Roll in recognition of contributing 50 hours or more of pro bono legal service in the District of Columbia during 2024. Launched in 2011, the Honor Roll is issued annually by the District of Columbia Courts in partnership with the D.C. Access to Justice Commission, the D.C. Bar, and the D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center to recognize lawyers who contribute 50 or more pro bono hours in D.C. during the prior year.
Thomas J. MacNeely Recognized by Volunteers in Medicine as a Core Volunteer
Recently, Volunteers in Medicine shared a post on their social media thanking their core group of volunteers, including our own Thomas J. MacNeely, the Chair of our Real Estate Department. This recognition also appeared in The Citizens’ Voice on April 23, 2025. Volunteers in Medicine provides free primary and preventative medical, dental, and behavioral health services to low-income families in Luzerne County. Tom has been volunteering with them for years.
Highlighting Pennsylvania’s Mental Health Courts
In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, the Pennsylvania Courts today released an infographic highlighting data from the state’s mental health courts. In 2023, 67% of all discharged participants graduated successfully from these treatment programs and among those graduates, there was a 92% increase in employment.
