It was obvious the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2025-26 would be different from the start. Naturally, they had to be after Mike Sullivan was out and a rookie NHL coach was taking over. The changes were visible from Muse’s very first day, a high-energy, up tempo practice with assistant coaches banging sticks enthusiastically on the glass of the practice rink. Veterans fed off the energy of the camp, raving about the organization, intention and tone created by a brand new staff.

On Wednesday, The Athletic released its annual NHL player tiers list, taking the top-150 players in the league and putting them into separate tiers to indicate what level they are on. The tiers include MVP level, franchise player, All-Star, star, and support players. The list is compiled by taking into account player net ratings, the writer rankings, and a panel of 20 people within the NHL.

The latest official Team USA to trade request is goalie Connor Hellebuyck. Before anyone asks, there’s no reason to expect he would be in Pittsburgh’s interests- or more importantly nor would they be on his list. The Athletic recently listed eight possibilities of teams that might make sense, and the Penguins were nowhere to be found. That about sums it up. The Pittsburgh Penguins unveiled the seasonlong promotional lineup during home games this season, featuring 22 unique theme nights for fans of all ages and interests. After last week’s look at our 2024 outlook about predicting the 2026 Penguins, let’s take the impossible stab at looking at what the 2028 Penguins could be working with. This task is tough, since barely any players are under contract for the future. Pittsburgh only has six players under contract for 2028-29 as of right now. There’s a decent enough chance that two of them (Ryan Graves and Ville Koivunen) could be bought out or otherwise removed from the roster despite the current contractual status.
