Credit: The Conversation, CC BY-ND In 1902, British explorer Robert Falcon Scott spotted a large group of large black and white birds at Ross Island, Antarctica. This was among the many milestones of Scott's famous Discovery expedition: the first breeding colony of emperor penguins. Now, only 124 years since this penguin colony was discovered, emperor penguins have officially been listed as endangered, along with the Antarctic fur seal.

Credit: Tom Parkin, CC BY-ND Hidden among the red sandstone escarpments of Mutawintji National Park in western New South Wales lives a rare lizard, long isolated in this arid landscape. Known to Wiimpatja Aboriginal Owners as kungaka—"the hidden one"—we have now scientifically described it as a new species: Liopholis mutawintji. For decades, this little lizard was thought to be an isolated population of a widespread skink.

Dark matter can accumulate inside a compact star and form a tiny endoparasitic black hole (EBH) at its core. In a highly magnetized star, the growing EBH compresses and twists the magnetic field, which pushes back against infalling matter and slows its growth. Data compiled by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), the global agreement that regulates trade in threatened animals and plants, indicate that in the 1990s and early 2000s Africa was a leading supplier of live birds to global markets.

Currently, we emit roughly 42 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide from fossil fuel use and land use changes every year. To achieve the targets of the Paris Agreement, which included a long-term commitment to limit global warming to 1.5°C, it will also be necessary to do more than cut emissions.

That's one of the takeaways of a recent study of tall goldenrod, a common wildflower that runs rampant in fields across its native range in North America and other parts of the world where it has been introduced.
