How I Use Cycling to Become a Better Runner
Believe it or not, one of the most frequently asked questions I get about running isn’t even about running. It’s about how I use cycling to run better. Indeed, cycling has become a huge part of my overall training in recent years, partly out of necessity and partly out of utility. I wanted to find a way to train more without putting myself at risk of injury. I’ve had several bone stress injuries in the last 5 years as a result of trying to aggressively increase volume, intensity, or both.
Physiology Friday #324: How Can We Make Science Useful?
Almost every time I read a new scientific study, and especially every time I sit down to write about one, I find myself returning to the same basic question: What the heck can I actually do with this? In the world of exercise science, nutrition science, and medical science, much of the work is ultimately pointed toward application. We study the body because we want to understand how it works.

I Recorded a VO2 Max Masterclass
Greetings! Several months ago, Daren Lake (from the YouTube channel ‘The 1% Better Runner’ approached me with the idea of recording a “masterclass” on VO2 max. I said yes without hesitation. Below, you can find the video and show notes (both of which were published to Daren’s blog and YouTube channel). Enjoy! And give Daren a follow… he creates some incredible running-related content. VO2 max is your aerobic ceiling, but it is not the whole story.
Training Update | RACE WEEK, Running Thoughts, and My Latest Approach to Performance
Greetings! It’s been a while since I’ve posted a training log/training update… but that’s been intentional. I got injured last year during my build-up to the California International Marathon. I was obviously devastated. It was my first injury in nearly 2 years. And it occurred when I was in some of the best running shape of my life. It was also an “opportunity” to reset, refocus, and reestablish why I run.
The Ketone Study I've Been Waiting For...
Greetings! I’m incredibly excited to share this video with you for this week’s edition of the newsletter. I sat down with Dr. Latt Mansor of Ketone-IQ to dive deep into a brand-new study in cyclists showing that taking ketones after exercise enhances beneficial blood vessel responses and increases EPO production during recovery.1 I’ve provided the study abstract and summary below, but we get into all the details in the video.
My Home Gym / Garage Gym Tour
In this video, I’m giving you a full tour of my home gym (or garage gym, or “pain cave,” depending on the day) and reviewing some of the equipment I’ve been using to support my marathon training, cross-training, strength work, and general health. My training is built around consistency. Most days, that means running.
Physiology Friday #321: The New Language of 'Fatigue'

Physiology Friday #320: What Makes the 'Athlete's Heart' So Unique?
Greetings! Welcome to the Physiology Friday newsletter. Here’s my “favorite social post of the week". Maybe it’s the fact that the algorithm is feeding me more of this guy’s content, but Dr. Sean OMara seems to one-up himself every day with a more ridiculous take on health. Here, he claims that “fruit ages you” despite mounds of evidence that it probably does exactly the opposite (it’s loaded with nutrients, fiber, and other stuff that’s beneficial for health).
