I fawned over a falcon—a tiny American kestrel hunting grasshoppers from a utility wire. A timid fawn ate fallen crab apples until the flights of a blue jay, and a mourning dove frightened it. That would be in Juneau, Alaska, and that was my amazing view from the cabin veranda on board our small cruise ship while docking in the harbor.
