There is no reason for sexually active students at LC not to get tested for STIs, besides, perhaps, having already been tested recently. Rates of STI cases are on the rise globally, in the U.S. and in Portland. In 2018, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) modeling suggested that  approximately had an STI on any given day. Half of reported cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea and syphilis were in adolescents and young adults aged 15-24. Syphilis, in particular, is on the rise.

Lewis & Clark’s football team welcomed a new player, O’A Kamakawiwoole ’28, to the team this fall, who has quickly risen to the team’s leader board and earned a starting position on the field. Kamakawiwoole was recruited from the highly respected Saint Louis School in Honolulu, where he gained a reputation as a very talented quarterback. After attending a football camp at LC the summer before entering his junior year of high school, Coach Daniel Fields offered him a position with the Pioneers.

Portland is the perfect city for book lovers and avid readers. From holes-in-the-wall to city block-sized shops, even the most voracious reader will be satiated here. I bravely took it upon myself to visit bookshops around Portland, and have curated a list of my favorites. It was such a daunting task that, in fact, I lost hundreds of dollars in the process. You have been warned.

On Monday Oct. 7, students who walked past the Glade on their way to and from Lewis & Clark’s academic campus encountered an installation featuring 95 signs hammered into the ground. The display memorialized the hostages taken from Israel who are still held in captivity by the militant group Hamas. In a separate development, on the morning of Oct.

Dance Extravaganza, or what is more commonly referred to as Dance X, is an annual dance production held here at Lewis & Clark in which alumni, student choreographers and dancers are given the opportunity to showcase a semester’s worth of hard work for a large audience. This year’s production will be led by the Director of Dance, Professor Tiffany Mills, and this will be her first Dance X since joining the LC community last spring semester.

I am a sophomore transfer student, and this is my first year at Lewis & Clark. I spent my first year of college at the University of California, Berkeley, one of the most competitive schools in the country. There are 33,078 undergraduate students at Berkeley — 15 times more than the 2,205 here at LC. In such a large pond, you become nothing but a speck, just another face in the crowd.

On Oct. 1, Associated Student Body (ASB) released the results of the most recent senate election. Three senators were elected — George Steene ’25, Julian Orozco ’27 and Tanvi Shukla ’27. Senate elections took place from September 23-30. There were various polling booths around campus to encourage students to vote. Prospective senators were required to get 25 signatures from students to enter the election. Candidates then typically campaigned through social media, flyers and word-of-mouth.

As the puck dropped on Oct. 4, the Portland Winterhawks 2024-2025 hockey season began. Nine minutes into the first period, the Winterhawks drew first blood against the Victoria Royals. The Royals quickly returned the heat, scoring three back-to-back goals, temporarily placing them above the Winterhawks. The arena was buzzing with excitement, stands filled with enthusiastically cheering fans. After the second and third periods, the Winterhawks boosted ahead, securing a 5-3 win.
