From the beginning the music and visuals wrapped me in a blanket of naive serenity. As lapping waves peaked at me over soft sand, warm morning rays shimmered through an open window, illuminating a letter that sat unopened on a small coffee table. Soft piano notes set a scene that felt like a fresh beginning. Although I had no physical form in the game, its environments allowed me to experience each stage of life.

Scaling the mountain of learning that this game requires may be fun for some explorers, but it wasn’t a great entry point. This week 868-BACK took me through a thought process I can only describe as similar to the 5 stages of grief. Part of this is on me, who decided to try this sequel without playing its predecessor, 868-HACK, but its Kickstarter FAQ does claim that 868-BACK is a better entry point than the first game, so I was excited to give it a try.
